At noon on October 11, we arrived at the 832nd Regiment, Thai Nguyen Provincial Military Command. The once neat, "green-clean-beautiful" campus now had a completely different appearance - the color of the flood. Along the rows of houses, the traces of floodwater were still deep, almost reaching the ceiling of the first floor, like a wound that had not yet healed. The volleyball court, where cheers filled the afternoon, was now covered with a thick, dark layer of mud, which was gradually drying and cracking in patches. On the paths, the mud began to peel off, rolling into layers of gray. The rows of trees were covered in a silvery gray color, their leaves sticky with mud. Notably, although it was not yet the soldiers' lunch break, the unit's space was unusually quiet.

Soldiers of Regiment 832 overcome flood consequences at Lien Minh Primary School, Trang Xa commune, Thai Nguyen province.

We learned that since the morning of October 7, almost all officers and soldiers of the unit have spread out in all directions to evacuate people and property to safety. When the water receded, they helped the local government and people overcome the consequences, so only a small number remained in the unit.

Previously, when there was news that storm No. 11 (Matmo) was making landfall in our country, the Party Committee and Command of Regiment 832 organized to thoroughly grasp and prepare sufficient forces and means to focus on prioritizing support for local authorities and helping people with the spirit of "saving people first and foremost". The Regiment proactively moved some valuable assets and materials to the 2nd and 3rd floors to avoid floods, so as soon as receiving the mission from the Thai Nguyen Provincial Military Command, officers and soldiers of the Regiment immediately mobilized to the assigned locations to help people.

On October 10, right after the flood receded, 30 officers and soldiers of Regiment 832 were present at Trang Xa commune, Thai Nguyen province to help the locality and people overcome the consequences of the flood, prioritizing the general cleaning of the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee offices, medical stations, schools; helping families with meritorious services, families in difficult circumstances, single-parent families... The amount of mud, waste, and work was so great that every day the soldiers worked from 5:30 to 12:00 before taking a lunch break, then worked from 13:00 until dark. Therefore, in addition to the above locations, the unit also focused on helping Thanh Tien hamlet, Khuan Nang hamlet, Lang Den hamlet, Tham hamlet, Vang hamlet and Lien Minh Primary School.

Mr. Trieu Nho Lam, a resident of Thanh Tien hamlet, said: “My house was washed away by hundreds of cubic meters of landslides. Looking at the mess of belongings and mud all over the house, I was both heartbroken and didn’t know where to start cleaning up. Luckily, the soldiers came to help, otherwise my family of six wouldn’t have been able to finish cleaning up in a month. Thank you very much!”

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Thanh Hiep, Deputy Regiment Commander and Chief of Staff of Regiment 832, added: “In addition to Trang Xa commune, the unit also assigned forces to help the authorities and people of Phan Dinh Phung and Quan Trieu wards, Thai Nguyen province to soon stabilize all aspects of life. After completing this task, we will return to clean up and overcome the consequences of floods at the unit.”
