Ms. Le Thi Mai (born in 1962), residing in Ward 3, Nam Dong Ha Commune, is one of the disadvantaged individuals who received a health insurance card at the beginning of 2026. When asked about her situation, she only sighed quietly. Her husband passed away from cancer, and since then, her family's life has become even more difficult.
Currently, she lives with her son, a mechanic with an unstable income, but she has to shoulder the responsibility of caring for four young grandchildren (two from her daughter and two from her son). The cost of food, education, medicine, and daily expenses is already a huge burden, so buying health insurance is something she has never dared to think about.
"Before, without health insurance, all I hoped for was good health to save my children and grandchildren the expense, because illness would only add to their suffering," Mrs. Mai confided.
Given her circumstances, in early 2026, the Women's Association of Ward 3, Nam Dong Ha Commune, directly presented her with a health insurance card. For many, it's just a small gift, but for Ms. Mai, it's a huge encouragement, a "lifeline" giving her more opportunities to receive healthcare when she unfortunately falls ill.
Not only Ms. Mai, but in the first quarter of 2026, the Women's Union of Nam Dong Ha ward also donated 6 health insurance cards to members in difficult circumstances. These cards were raised through collecting scrap metal and recyclable materials, transforming waste into a source of funding to support vulnerable people through the "Green House" model implemented by the local branches.

Sharing about this activity, Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Thuy, President of the Women's Union of Nam Dong Ha Ward, said: "The Union has determined that supporting health insurance cards not only helps women alleviate immediate difficulties, but more importantly, creates conditions for members to receive healthcare and prevent risks. The branches maintain the 'Green House' model, encouraging members to participate, contributing whatever they can, accumulating small amounts to help those who truly need it."
Most importantly, the spirit of sharing has become a beautiful habit in the community. From seemingly discarded plastic bottles and cardboard, local branches have contributed to providing opportunities for medical examinations and treatment for many people. Therefore, the movement not only focuses on material support but also spreads a spirit of humane and responsible living."
In reality, for many poor women, single mothers, the elderly, or families facing hardship, health insurance is a "shield" that helps alleviate their worries about medical expenses. A single illness can plunge an entire family into debt, but with a health insurance card, people have more opportunities to access medical services, receive timely treatment, and avoid long-term consequences. Based on this reality, donating health insurance cards to disadvantaged women's union members is becoming a practical approach for women's unions at all levels throughout the province.
Over the past period, the Provincial Women's Union has effectively signed and implemented a cooperation program with the Provincial Social Insurance (BHXH) agency; and at the same time, organized extensive dissemination of policies and laws related to social insurance and health insurance. Many meaningful models have been developed and replicated. Through systematic and flexible approaches, the various levels of the Women's Union have contributed to raising awareness among members about the role of insurance in protecting health and stabilizing life.
Beyond simply promoting and mobilizing support, the association also directly assists those in need through concrete actions. In 2025, the association at all levels donated 65 health insurance cards to disadvantaged members; and mobilized over 10,900 members to participate in social insurance and health insurance. In the first quarter of 2026, the association will continue to donate 11 health insurance cards to disadvantaged members, including 6 cards from the Women's Union of Nam Dong Ha Ward, 1 card from the Women's Union of Bac Gianh Ward, 2 cards from the Women's Union of Quang Ninh Commune, and 2 cards from the Women's Union of Ai Tu Commune. Behind each card is the collective effort, the love, and the responsibility of the Women's Union members.
"Giving health insurance cards to disadvantaged members is a deeply humane act, demonstrating the spirit of 'mutual support and compassion,' ensuring that vulnerable women are not left behind. In the future, the association will continue to closely coordinate with the Social Insurance agency, promote propaganda, expand effective mobilization models, and mobilize social resources to support more members in difficult circumstances," shared Tran Thi Thuy Nga, Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union.
