In the 2023-2024 school year, the number of students from preschool to high school in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to reach more than 1.7 million people.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, with more than 1.66 million students in the previous school year, the city had 71,171 teachers. Of these, more than 56,000 were public teachers and nearly 21,000 were non-public teachers.

Therefore, when the number of students next school year increases by more than 35,000, the city needs 79,350 teachers.

To prepare human resources for theeducation sector, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City determined that the recruitment demand for civil servants in affiliated public service units in the first phase is 308 civil servants, including 255 teachers and 53 staff.

The demand for recruiting personnel for public service units under the Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City and districts is 4,466 teachers. Of which, the demand for preschool teachers is 986 people, primary school teachers is 1,667 people, secondary school teachers is 1,748 people, and specialized teachers is 65 teachers.

Thus, the total number of teachers needed to be recruited in the coming time is more than 4,700 people.

Estimated student population in Ho Chi Minh City in the 2023-2024 school year (Source: Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee).

In general, the number of students in the 2023-2024 school year will increase significantly at the secondary and high school levels, concentrated in Thu Duc City and some districts such as District 12, Go Vap, Binh Tan, Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon districts.

The reason is that this area is in a period of rapid urbanization, so the population growth rate is high.

The scale of the number of schools is expected to increase from 2,310 to 2,325 facilities (an increase of 15 facilities). Of which, preschool level will increase by 8 schools, primary school by 5 schools, middle school and high school by only 1 school for each level.

In preparation for the new school year, the city plans to put into use in 2023 48 projects with 672 new classrooms (of which 371 additional classrooms) with a total investment of more than VND 1,503 billion.

The increase in the number of students mentioned above leads to an increase in the number of staff, teachers, employees and an increase in the payroll, which will increase the city's budget expenditure.

Currently, in some districts, there are many primary schools with a class size of over 45 students, which has somewhat limited management and teaching quality, not meeting the requirements of the 2018 general education program.
