Brazil's Minister of Justice and Public Security Flávio Dino announced that the country will increase the presence of security forces in the Amazon rainforest to step up the fight against organized crime and environmental crime, as well as suppress drug and arms trafficking.
According to Mr. Dino, the Brazilian government will allocate a budget of about 410 million USD for security enhancement activities in the Amazon region, and plans to build a coordination center in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state.
On August 7 and 8, the Amazon Summit will convene in Belem, Brazil, with the aim of developing a common policy to protect the world's largest rainforest. This is the first time a common policy has been developed between governments of member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
