In recent times, farmers in the province have boldly renovated mixed gardens and transformed production models to suit production conditions. At the same time, they have proactively applied advances in science and technology, thereby increasing productivity, quality and economic efficiency on the same unit area.

Boldly renovating mixed gardens brings quite good economic efficiency to farmers.
Boldly renovating mixed gardens brings quite good economic efficiency to farmers.

Converting mixed gardens to growing economically efficient crops not only helps to fully exploit the potential and advantages of production land, increase profits, but also helps farmers escape poverty sustainably.

From 4 hectares of mixed garden converted to growing kumquat and durian, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (An Binh commune) said: “Previously, my garden grew all kinds of things but was not well cared for, so the productivity was low and there was no economic efficiency. After the local authorities mobilized to renovate the mixed garden, I boldly planted durian, then planted kumquat and chili to earn short-term income to support long-term. Thanks to that, for the past 2 years, I have had a good income from chili and kumquat, while the durian is still growing well.”

Making ridges on 3 ineffective fields to grow coconuts and kumquats, Mr. Pham Minh Chanh (Quoi An commune) shared: "Almost everything around has been ridged so growing rice is not effective, I switched to growing coconuts and kumquats and ornamental areca trees. There is money coming in and out. The prices of ornamental areca trees and kumquats are always stable, adding coconuts which are currently priced high so the profit also increased by 40-60% compared to before."

Similarly, converting mixed gardens to grow seedless lemons, Mr. Le Van Hanh (Dong Thanh ward) said: “The orange and grapefruit gardens are old and ineffective, so I switched to growing seedless lemons. Growing seedless lemons from soil improvement to the start of harvest takes about a year. This type of tree is easy to grow, easy to care for, and bears fruit all year round. Thanks to that, I have a regular income, and my family life is more stable.”

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in recent times, the cultivation sector has undergone a transformation in line with the restructuring orientation of the agricultural sector, which is to reduce rice acreage and increase fruit tree acreage, and this trend will continue.

The renovation of mixed gardens contributes to changing people's awareness of production practices from self-sufficiency to the mindset of commodity production associated with production linkage and product consumption; transforming crop structure, improving land use coefficient, not leaving land fallow; actively applying science and technology to agricultural production, creating potential directions, bringing economic efficiency, sustainable poverty reduction, contributing to environmental improvement.

Recently, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment) has also promoted propaganda and raised awareness among farmers about the importance of garden economy; guided households to rearrange gardens scientifically, in accordance with the overall planning and local soil conditions.

Continue to maintain and develop stable, large-scale concentrated commodity production areas such as high-quality rice specialized areas, organic coconut areas, purple onions, watermelons, sugarcane, etc. Build and maintain agricultural product brands and growing area codes; gradually develop high-tech agriculture, clean agriculture, organic agriculture, safety, green, clean, and circular production to meet market demand.

At the same time, replicating a number of effective production models, applying new varieties, technical advances and mechanization in production contributes to improving productivity and quality, bringing relatively good economic efficiency.

The development of brands and growing area codes has been focused on creating favorable conditions for the export of key agricultural products of the province. Strengthening the development of cooperative and cooperative models to create conditions for farmers to connect, introduce and promote products, and support the search for markets for products so that farmers can feel secure in production.
