With only half a month left until the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, farmers in the province are busy taking care of and selling peach blossoms, orchids, etc. in their gardens and flower markets. Flower growing has helped many people in districts and cities earn high incomes every time Tet comes and spring comes.
In the early days of spring, the streets in the city are more beautiful and brilliant with flags, slogans, the most prominent is the flower market on Le Loi Avenue with all kinds of flowers blooming. In recent years, this place has become a place for flower growers and traders to display and sell flowers and ornamental plants to serve the people's Tet shopping needs. The entire 300m long street is filled with peach blossoms, kumquat trees, and cymbidiums; the atmosphere is bustling between buyers and sellers. Here, many gardeners in the province with many years of experience in growing flowers gather.
Visiting the flower and ornamental plant display area of Hong Quan Flower Garden (Ban Moi, San Thang Commune, Lai Chau City), through conversation, we learned that Mr. Vu Manh Quan's family - Owner of Hong Quan Flower Garden has been involved in growing flowers and ornamental plants for 9 years. To serve the needs of customers, the couple prepares very early the work of caring for and shaping the plants to ensure that the flowers bloom in time for Tet.
Mr. Quan shared: “I have focused on selling flowers and ornamental plants since 2015. During Tet, my family sells a wider variety of flowers such as: honeysuckle, money tree, happiness, azalea, four-season tea, raspberry chrysanthemum, large chrysanthemum, primrose, gerbera, dahlia... To make the flowers bloom on time for Tet, with big flowers and beautiful colors, I have to calculate the exact time for the plants to be put in the pot, carry out the technical requirements for fertilizing, creating canopy, pruning, fertilizing, and preventing pests and diseases... Currently, my family has nearly 400 ornamental plants and flowers of all kinds with prices ranging from tens of thousands to tens of millions of VND. In addition, we import Phalaenopsis orchids, Santo orchids, and honeysuckle.”
Hong Quan Garden House (San Thang Commune, Lai Chau City) has a variety of flowers and ornamental plants to serve customers' needs during Tet.
With a passion for flowers and ornamental plants, Mr. Lu A Pao - Owner of Quang Thanh Garden (Ho Thau Commune) has spent a lot of time and effort researching and caring for them. In 2011, Mr. Pao started his business and invested in 600 wild peach trees; in the following years, he continued to expand the scale by 150 more peach trees. According to Mr. Pao, the technique for planting and caring for peach trees is relatively simple. To flower on time for Tet, around mid-November of the lunar calendar, all the leaves need to be stripped so that the tree can concentrate its nutrients on the buds, ensuring that the buds are abundant, even, plump, with large flowers, thick petals, and beautiful colors. Not only growing ornamental peach trees, Mr. Pao also sells large, many-year-old peach trees to reach out to business customers. His consumer market is not only in Lai Chau but also extends to the provinces of Hanoi , Phu Tho... with "huge" peach trees priced at hundreds of millions of VND. In recent years, Quang Thanh Garden also has a service for renting peach trees for Tet; invest in planting azaleas, apricot blossoms, lemon trees, and plums.
Mr. Pao shared: “I often go online and on YouTube to learn more skills in bending branches and shaping trees. Currently, the garden owns over 1,000 flower and ornamental trees such as: wild peach, peach blossom, azalea, mai, plum, lemon... From growing flowers, after deducting expenses, I earn over 800 million VND/year, creating stable jobs for 10-15 rural workers, with salaries from 6-12 million VND/person/month”.
To meet the needs of decorating houses and gardens during the New Year and Spring, many households and gardeners in the province have invested in planting and trading flowers and ornamental plants. Typically, in San Thang commune (Lai Chau city) with the model of growing roses, chrysanthemums, and gladiolus; Nung Nang commune (Tam Duong district), Sin Suoi Ho commune (Phong Tho district) with the model of growing cymbidium flowers... Currently, cymbidiums are considered a potential crop and bring many economic benefits, beautify the landscape of highland villages, and attract tourists. Along with that, faded peach branches with moldy trunks are also "hunted" by tree enthusiasts, so gardeners and traders often buy from local people to transfer to consume in the lowland provinces.
The model of growing flowers and ornamental plants is an effective direction in transforming the crop structure of people in the province. Thanks to the quick response to the market, meeting the diverse tastes of consumers along with the application of scientific and technical advances in the care process, many flower growing households have become rich right in their hometown.
