Russia is developing a high-speed train model for its high-speed rail network, with the unique feature that the train will operate completely without a driver.
Russian Railways CEO Oleg Belozerov said: “In the future, trains will be driverless, the level of automation will be very high, and eventually, the entire operation will be handled by artificial intelligence,” he also revealed that the assembly of the first train model will begin in the coming days.
Artificial intelligence will not only control the train, but will also be able to handle emergency situations, optimize speed, and ensure safety throughout the journey. This is considered an important step in the modernization of Russia's railway transport system, towards the goal of full automation.
High-speed rail is one of Russia's key projects in the coming time. In addition to applying driverless technology, a high-speed rail line directly connecting St. Petersburg to Moscow is also under construction.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov shared: “One of the most ambitious projects today is the construction of a high-speed railway connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow. Our city has already begun preparing the necessary infrastructure. Currently, the design of the main elements of the street and road network is underway.”
The high-speed line will be a dedicated, electrified double-track line for trains traveling at speeds of 200 to 400 km/h. Russia currently has no such line. The pilot project will be a high-speed rail (HSR) line between Moscow and St. Petersburg, which is expected to be fully operational by 2028. When completed, the travel time between the two cities, a distance of over 700 km, will be reduced to about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
