On June 11, Newsweek magazine published an open-source positioning map showing that the USNS Victorious had been operating in the South China Sea since at least May 22, when it moved south through the Luzon Strait – the route connecting the South China Sea with the Philippine Sea.
This is a specialized naval vessel, capable of collecting important underwater data for military operations.
The ship is equipped with the SURTASS extended-range sensor system, which collects underwater acoustic data to support anti-submarine warfare operations.
The most recent data recorded the ship operating in the central area of the East Sea on June 10.
The US Navy's 7th Fleet – the force responsible for maintaining the US presence in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean – confirmed to Newsweek that the USNS Victorious was conducting "routine operations" in the South China Sea.
The South China Sea serves as a vital transit route for naval deployments between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
