The women’s 109km road race took place this afternoon, June 12, in Rayong, Thailand. With a flat, hilly road, the riders raced at high speeds. Despite many attacks, no rider escaped the crowd.
About 3 km from the finish line, Chinese, Korean, Uzbek and Thai racers actively increased their speed to escape. With the support of her teammates, Nguyen Thi That maintained her position in the leading group using the wind-hiding strategy. Only when she was 200 meters from the finish line did the An Giang cyclist press the pedal, speeding past her Chinese opponent and a home racer to claim victory.
This is Nguyen Thi That's third Asian championship gold medal after 2018 and 2022.
Previously, in the morning competition of the 46km women's youth team, the Vietnamese cycling team also won a gold medal with the victory of Thach Thi Ngoc Thao.
In this event, each team had four athletes supporting each other on the track, while Vietnam only had Ngoc Thao and Nguyen Thi Be Hong competing. Despite being at a disadvantage in numbers, the two Vietnamese cyclists chose a reasonable strategy. Ngoc Thao and Be Hong accepted to let the stronger and more numerous teams control the game, only relying on the front group.
About halfway through the race, Uzbekistan rider Rizaeva attacked and escaped, leaving the group behind by a few dozen seconds. In an effort to catch up, Ngoc Thao combined with Kazakhstan rider Yevgeniya to catch up with Rizaeva with about 8 km left.
About 3 km from the finish line, the race entered a slope and that was when Ngoc Thao attacked. She and Yevgeniya escaped, leaving Rizaeva behind. At the finish line, the Vietnamese cyclist sprinted to beat Yevgeniya and won the gold medal.
Vietnam finished the 2023 Asian Cycling Championship with three gold medals, won by Nguyen Thi That, Thach Thi Ngoc Thao, Nguyen Thi Be Hong and a bronze medal for men won by Pham Le Xuan Loc in the 30km individual time trial.
