On the evening of August 25, Renata Zarazua (27 years old) had to face world No. 6 Madison Keys in the women's singles at the 2025 US Open. This was considered an unequal battle as the American female athlete was rated higher than the Mexican player.
However, the Australian Open champion showed poor form when making too many personal errors. Keys had 89 unforced errors, including 14 double faults.
According to AP News: “She (Madison Keys) made so many errors from spin shots that Zarazua only needed eight decisive points to win the biggest victory of her career.”
For her part, Zarazua led 4-2 in the first set, just one point away from winning. However, she failed to capitalize on her opportunities and let Keys take the lead in the first set.
In the second set, Renata Zarazua continued to fall behind 0-3, but then won 5 consecutive games to lead 5-3. The match became more dramatic when both players went into a tie-break series before Zarazua pushed the match into a deciding set.
The match ended with Keys missing a forehand. Zarazua had a good performance to win the final set with the final score of 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 7-5.
Renata Zarazua made history, as it had been 30 years since a Mexican woman had beaten a top 10 player at a Grand Slam. The last time before this feat was in 1995, when Angelica Gavaldon defeated Jana Novotna (seeded 3rd, top 10) at the 1995 Australian Open.
“As you can see, we don’t have many tennis players in our country,” Zarazua told CNN after the match. “We just tried our best, but for sure, I could hear the Mexicans cheering, so it was great.”
While Madison Keys is one of 25 Americans competing in the women's singles at the home Grand Slam, Zarazua is the only Mexican player in the draw.
