The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on June 23 that Russian forces had carried out a group attack using high-precision long-range weapons. The target of the attack was a training center for pilots and engineers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
"The objectives of the attack were achieved," the Russian Defense Ministry said at its daily press briefing. "All assigned targets were destroyed."
The Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the surrounding area, and several other places across the country were on air raid alert for about an hour in the early morning. Then, a series of explosions rang out in various locations near the city.
Mykola Oleshchuk, commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, stated on Telegram that air defenses in the Kyiv region shot down two of three Kalibr cruise missiles launched by the Russian military. However, losses were still reported in the capital.
A video shared on social media appears to show multiple Russian Kalibr cruise missiles flying at very low altitudes toward Kyiv.
Kalibr is a Russian multi-purpose cruise missile system developed by the Novator design bureau. This missile can carry various warheads, allowing it to destroy a wide range of targets in the air, on land, and at sea. Kalibr is considered one of Russia's many key weapons.
The missile is 6.2-8.9 meters long (depending on the variant), with a breakthrough range of 1,500-2,500 km. It can carry a warhead with approximately 400-500 kg of explosives at Mach 3.
The Kalibr cruise missile is equipped with GLONASS satellite navigation and inertial guidance systems, along with an ARGS-14E radar seeker with a range of 20 km. The active radar warhead allows the missile to accurately strike its target even if GPS jamming occurs.

The group attack may have been Russia's response to attacks carried out by Ukraine against the Russian Belgorod region, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, and damage to facilities at the Russian-operated Zaporozhye nuclear power plant the day before.
Notably, the Russian military resumed group attacks targeting military infrastructure and command centers in Ukraine in March in response to ongoing attacks by the Kiev government on civilians and infrastructure in Russia.
