The Russian military reportedly destroyed a Ukrainian M270 multiple launch rocket system in the Zaporozhye direction. According to SF, this multiple launch rocket system was equipped with MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles.
First, a Russian reconnaissance drone spotted a Ukrainian M270 multiple launch rocket system near the settlement of Shevchenkovskoye. Shortly thereafter, it was attacked by Russian forces using Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles. It is not clear exactly when the attack took place. However, a video of the incident appeared in the media on June 14.
Britain, Norway, France and Germany have supplied at least 16 multiple launch rocket systems and MARS II to Kiev forces after Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago.
Each MARS II launcher or multiple launch rocket system can be equipped with up to 12 GPS-guided GMLRS M30/M31 series missiles, with a range of over 70 km, or 2 MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, with a range of 165 km to 300 km depending on the version.
Meanwhile, the Iskander-M missile used by the Russian military to destroy the multiple rocket launcher near Shevchenkovskoye has a range of up to 500km. It can be equipped with various warheads, including cluster warheads, fuel-air enhanced explosive warheads, high-explosive fragmentation warheads, ground-penetrating warheads for bunker busting, and electromagnetic pulse devices for anti-radar missions.
The missile is highly maneuverable as it is guided by an inertial navigation system with GLONASS support. It can also be equipped with an optical seeker with a mapping area correlation system for terminal guidance.
The Russian military destroyed or damaged several Ukrainian MARS II multiple launch rocket systems and approximately 40 M142 HIMARS medium-range rocket systems. The M142 HIMARS is a lighter wheeled system transferred to Ukraine by the United States.
However, this is the first time a Ukrainian multiple launch rocket system carrying ATACMS missiles has been attacked and destroyed by Russian fire.
