Marc-André ter Stegen missed the first training session of the 2025/26 season marking the beginning of a tense tug-of-war with Barcelona. |
On July 14, Barcelona gathered for their first training session after the summer break under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick. However, Ter Stegen refused to go to the training ground, instead he chose to work out alone in the gym.
According to Mundo Deportivo , the move marks the beginning of a “civil war” between Ter Stegen and the club, with Barcelona actively looking to push him away from Camp Nou.
According to Sport , coach Hansi Flick informed Ter Stegen in a meeting on July 11 that he would only be the third choice in goal next season, behind Garcia (number 1) and Szczęsny (number 2). This decision was seen as a shock to the German goalkeeper, especially when Ter Stegen is the captain and has a contract until 2028.
That's why Ter Stegen wanted to respond. The goalkeeper decided to refuse to attend the first training session with the team, but still appeared at Barcelona's headquarters on the first day of the team meeting.
This is seen as an act against coach Hansi Flick, showing dissatisfaction with the Barcelona leadership. Ter Stegen currently has no intention of leaving. The German star believes in his own ability and believes that if everything is fair, he will regain his position.
However, Flick has confirmed that his compatriot goalkeeper will not play next season. Barca are considering options to help Ter Stegen leave, including early termination of his contract and payment of a year's salary in advance for the remaining three years.
