VTV.vn - Tesla's sales in the EU are projected to fall by nearly 40% in 2025 despite strong growth in the electric vehicle market, indicating the company is struggling to keep up with competition and changing consumer preferences.

Figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on December 23rd show that Tesla's sales in the European Union (EU) market are projected to fall by nearly 40% in 2025. This development occurs while electric vehicle sales across the EU increased by 28% in the same period of 2024, compared to January-November 2025.

Between January and November 2025, Tesla sold 129,024 vehicles in the EU, a sharp decrease from 210,869 vehicles in the same period last year. In November 2025 alone, Tesla's sales continued to decline by 34%.

According to ACEA, electric vehicles currently account for 17% of the EU car market. However, ACEA notes that European consumer preferences are increasingly shifting towards hybrid vehicles, which currently hold around 35% of the market share.

According to analysts, Tesla is suffering significant damage to its image in Europe, given that the brand owner, billionaire Elon Musk, had publicly supported US President Donald Trump before their disagreements arose.

Prior to that, Tesla's sales in China had fallen to 26,006 vehicles in October 2025, the lowest level in three years, as the American electric vehicle manufacturer struggled with weak demand in this fiercely competitive market.

Compared to the same period last year, Tesla's sales in China have decreased by 35.8%. However, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers released in November 2025 shows that the number of Tesla vehicles exported from China in October 2025 increased to its highest level in two years, reaching 35,491 units.

Tesla is facing increasing pressure in China, its second-largest market after the US, in the third quarter of 2025. Tesla's market share in the Chinese electric vehicle market fell to just 3.2% in October 2025, a sharp drop from 8.7% the previous month and its lowest level in over three years.

Overall car sales in China fell as expected in October 2025, due to weakening consumer sentiment amid shrinking government subsidies and tax breaks.

According to automotive industry experts, Tesla is currently facing increasing competitive pressure from Chinese electric vehicle brands with comparable pricing. Chinese automaker BYD has recorded the strongest growth among automakers, with sales soaring 240%. BYD is rapidly closing the gap with Tesla, with sales reaching 110,715 vehicles to date, a significant increase from 32,562 vehicles in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, according to a recent analysis by the consulting firm Equilar for Reuters, Tesla's board members have collectively earned more than $3 billion through stock awards. This figure far exceeds the compensation received by executives at the largest US technology companies during the same period.

The Equilar report indicates that, since 2004, Kimbal Musk, the younger brother of billionaire Elon Musk, has earned nearly $1 billion based on the increased value of his held or liquidated stock options. Director Ira Ehrenpreis has earned $869 million since 2007, and Chairwoman Robyn Denholm has earned $650 million since 2014.

Notably, this massive income was recorded even though Tesla executives haven't rewarded themselves with new stock options since 2020. Tesla's board of directors agreed to cease receiving compensation starting in 2021 to settle a shareholder lawsuit alleging excessively high board member salaries.
