As a tournament in the BWF Super 500 system, Arctic Open is among the most prestigious year-end tournaments in badminton.
Thailand brought a strong army to the tournament, aiming to win at least 1 gold medal. And after nearly 1 week of competition, that goal is clearer than ever when Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Busanan Ongbamrungphan respectively entered the men's singles final and women's singles final.
In the men's singles, Kunlavut was seeded number 1. He cruised to the final without losing a single game.
Kunlavut's opponent in the final was Chou Tien Chen, who was over 35 years old. Although seeded second, the Taiwanese player was considered much weaker than Kunlavut, who was at the peak of his career.
But then the surprise appeared. In the first game, Chou stunned Kunlavut with a 21-11 victory.
When Kunlavut regained his form in the second game, Chou accepted a quick loss with a score of 13-21, thereby concentrating on the deciding game.
The two players competed fiercely for every point in this game, and in the end Chou won with a score of 21-19.
This victory brought Chou the 11th BWF title of his career and a prize of 35,625 USD. As for Kunlavut, he has not been able to quench his thirst for a title that has lasted for nearly 5 months.
Right after Kunlavut's defeat, Thai badminton received more bad news when Busanan could not make a surprise against No. 1 seed Akane Yamaguchi in the women's singles final. She lost the match with a score of 19-21, 16-21.
From promising to "dominate" the tournament by sending the largest star squad, Thailand ended up with a humiliating defeat. China and Malaysia - Thailand's main rivals in this tournament - both took home at least one gold medal.
