Outstanding pre-merger results
According to the National Criteria for New Rural Development, there are 2 criteria directly related to theeducation sector. Criterion No. 5 (Schools) stipulates that a commune meets the standards when 70% or more of its schools (preschool, primary, secondary, and inter-level) meet national standards for facilities and teaching equipment.
Criterion No. 14 (Education and Training) requires the commune to meet the standards of universalizing preschool education for 5-year-old children, universalizing primary and secondary education from level 2 and above; eliminating illiteracy at level 2 and the rate of secondary school graduates continuing to high school reaching 70% or more.
To implement the above criteria, the education sector of localities in Thai Nguyen province has proactively reviewed and adjusted the school network to suit actual conditions; effectively organized the apparatus; increased investment in facilities and teaching equipment; and at the same time improved the quality of teachers and management staff.
From July 1, 2025, Thai Nguyen province (new) was established on the basis of merging Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan provinces according to Resolution No. 202/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly. After the merger, the province has a natural area of over 8,375 km², a population of nearly 1.8 million people, with 92 communes and wards.

Before the merger, both provinces achieved many positive results in implementing educational criteria. Thai Nguyen (old) had more than 600 schools meeting national standards, accounting for 89.2% - high compared to the national average. Bac Kan province also had more than 140 schools meeting standards, accounting for 49.65%.
Not only stopping at building standard schools, the quality of universal education in the two localities has also been significantly improved. Thai Nguyen is one of the first provinces in the country to achieve universal primary education level 3 and secondary education level 2. Bac Kan maintains the standards of universal preschool education for 5-year-old children, universal primary education level 3, universal secondary education level 2 and illiteracy eradication level 2.
Teacher Nguyen Thi Chai - Principal of Nha Long Kindergarten, Phu Binh Commune, Thai Nguyen Province - shared: "In addition to the State's investment capital, the school also actively mobilizes social resources to repair small items, ensuring that it meets national standards at level 2. This is the joint effort of the entire political system and the parent community."
At Sy Binh Primary and Secondary School, Vinh Thong Commune, Thai Nguyen Province, Principal Chu Quoc Dat proudly said: “The rate of students graduating from secondary school and completing primary school is 100% every year. The school always maintains universal education standards, and at the same time invests in solidifying classrooms, fully meeting teaching and learning conditions.”
These results have created a solid foundation to help Thai Nguyen effectively implement the new rural construction program, while promoting the fundamental and comprehensive innovation of education and training in the spirit of Resolution 29 of the Central Committee.
Next steps
After the merger, Thai Nguyen province currently has 976 educational facilities, including 351 kindergartens, 263 primary schools, 49 primary - secondary schools, 238 secondary schools, 4 secondary - high schools, 46 high schools; 2 continuing education centers and 16 vocational education - continuing education centers.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen province, the unit is continuing to implement the criteria of Schools, Education and Training in the construction of new rural areas. In particular, the key tasks are to review and supplement the planning for the development of schools meeting national standards; develop a plan for inspection, evaluation and recognition of standard schools; focus on investing in facilities in a synchronous and key direction, in accordance with the planning for new rural development in each locality.

At the same time, the work of universalizing education continues to be focused on. The Department of Education and Training directs localities to strengthen coordination with departments, sectors, unions and social organizations to mobilize maximum resources to care for the education cause.
The construction of a healthy, safe, friendly, student-centered educational environment continues to be promoted. The socialization of education, mobilizing organizations, individuals, and businesses to contribute facilities and teaching equipment is also showing clear results.
In the future, with a solid foundation, the good implementation of educational criteria will not only contribute to helping localities soon reach new rural standards, but also play a role in creating momentum for long-term, sustainable development for Thai Nguyen province.
