Tragedy strikes at football tournament in Africa

(Dan Tri) - The Algerian Ministry of Health said that 3 spectators were killed and more than 80 others were injured after an incident occurred at the championship celebration ceremony of MC Alger Club.

After a 0-0 draw with NC Magra, MC Alger officially defended their title in the Algerian national championship. Thousands of fans rushed forward to celebrate with the players, causing a security fence to collapse, causing dozens of people to fall from the upper stands to the lower floors.

The atmosphere on the field quickly became chaotic, many ambulances were used to transport people to the emergency room, causing the trophy ceremony to be postponed. MC Alger also mobilized all players and many staff to go to the hospital to donate blood, supporting those affected by the incident.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune later sent his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The incident occurred at the Stade du 5 Juillet stadium, which has a capacity of more than 64,000 people. According to Algerian media, this venue used to have a capacity of 110,000 spectators during the international friendly match between Algeria and Serbia in 2010, but due to severe degradation, the capacity of this stadium has been reduced by nearly half.

Algerian authorities said they would conduct a thorough investigation to clarify the cause of the collapse and determine the responsibilities of the parties involved. In parallel, inspections and reinforcement of safety systems at all stadiums nationwide will also be urgently deployed to prevent similar disasters in the future.

This tragedy is somewhat reminiscent of the Heysel disaster in Belgium, when a wall at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels suddenly collapsed, killing 39 people and injuring nearly 600 others during the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus on May 29, 1985. This is considered the most serious tragedy in football history.
