The procession of the palanquin, a distinctive feature of the Ba Trieu Temple Festival, attracts a large number of locals and tourists.

The People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province has just issued a document approving the proposal of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism regarding the organization of the Ba Trieu Temple Festival in 2026.

The festival will take place over three days, from April 8-10, 2026 (corresponding to the 21st-23rd day of the second lunar month), at the special national historical and architectural site of the Ba Trieu Relic Area, Trieu Loc commune.

According to the plan, the opening ceremony will be held at 8:00 AM on April 9, 2026 (which is the 22nd day of the 2nd lunar month).

The ceremonial part includes rituals such as offering incense, presenting the congratulatory address, delivering the opening speech, and beating the drum to officially open the festival.

The festival section features a theatrical performance recreating the uprising and the contributions of Lady Trieu in the struggle against the invading army, performed by the Lam Son Cultural and Arts Center.

Besides the main ceremony, the festival also includes traditional rituals at many historical sites associated with the life of Lady Trieu, such as: Lady Trieu Temple, Phu Dien village communal house, the tomb on Tung Mountain, De Tu Temple, and Ban The Shrine.

Alongside these activities are folk culture events, traditional games, exhibitions of paintings and documents about the life and career of the heroine, and the historical value of the Trieu Loc region.

The Provincial People's Committee has assigned the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to take the lead and coordinate with other departments, agencies, and localities to organize the festival in accordance with regulations, ensuring it is solemn, economical, safe, and civilized.

Thorough preparations are also required to ensure security and order, fire prevention and control, traffic safety, and environmental hygiene in order to serve the people and tourists from all over the world.

The Ba Trieu Temple Festival is an occasion to express the gratitude of today's generation to the national heroine, while also contributing to the education of patriotic traditions and arousing pride in Thanh Hoa, a land of "sacred land and outstanding people".

This also presents an opportunity to promote the image of the local cultural and historical heritage, attract tourists, and boost the development of spiritual tourism in the future.

According to historical records, in 248, Trieu Thi Trinh (also known as Lady Trieu), along with her brother Trieu Quoc Dat, a powerful district magistrate, gathered patriots, chose Nua Mountain as their base to practice martial arts, and launched an uprising to drive out the invading Eastern Wu army.

The Ba Trieu uprising later failed, and the female general committed suicide at Tung Mountain (now in Trieu Loc commune) on February 22nd, Mau Thin year (248).

Although the rebellion against the Eastern Wu army led by Lady Trieu was unsuccessful, it became a glorious milestone in history, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of our nation in resisting foreign invaders.

To commemorate the contributions of Lady Trieu, the people of Trieu Loc commune erected a temple and built her tomb on the top of Tung Mountain, built a shrine on Gai Mountain, and constructed a large communal house in Phu Dien village.

Throughout the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties, temples and shrines were renovated, granted imperial decrees, and established regulations for rituals with national ceremonies.

Every year, on the anniversary of the death of Queen Trieu (February 22nd according to the lunar calendar), local people and visitors from all over come to offer incense at the Trieu Temple and related historical sites, and also organize many rituals and cultural and sporting activities such as the procession of the Queen's palanquin and the presentation of ceremonial prayers at the temple.

Among these rituals, the procession of the palanquin (also known as the procession of the spirit) is the most distinctive, important, and sacred ceremony, attracting a large number of locals and tourists.

What makes the palanquin procession unique is the phenomenon that locals call "flying palanquin".

Spanning over 17 centuries, the Ba Trieu Temple Festival is one of the oldest, most influential, and most culturally and historically significant festivals in Thanh Hoa province.

In 2014, the historical and architectural site of Ba Trieu Temple was recognized as a Special National Monument.
