When people donate land to build roads.
On a weekend morning, Ms. Huynh Ngoc Thao, a resident of Long Thuan hamlet, Thanh My Tay commune, excitedly attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Canal 10 bridge connecting the Long Hung and Long Thuan banks. In her memory, Thanh My Tay was formerly considered a "remote" commune of the old Chau Phu district, with limited transportation infrastructure and a life of hardship for its people.
"I witnessed the construction of new bridges and the paving of well-maintained concrete roads; it was an unparalleled joy. Now, people's lives are more comfortable, and children can go to school without having to worry about the dusty sun and muddy rain like I did in the past," said Mrs. Thao.
The woman, born and raised in Thanh My Tay, spoke with deep emotion. Ms. Thao herself contributed financially to the construction of the Canal 10 bridge, hoping for its early completion so that residents could travel and transport goods more conveniently.
Born into a family deeply connected to Thanh My Tay commune for generations, Mr. Tran Minh Hien, Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Tran Van Thanh Memorial Temple Historical Site, is even more delighted with the changes in the former Lang Linh area. “My family has lived here for many generations, so we have clearly witnessed the transformation of our homeland. What was once a swamp, a marsh, and a base for resistance against the French by Commander Tran Van Thanh has developed into a prosperous and well-maintained place, worthy of the contributions of our ancestors who came here to develop this land,” Mr. Hien said emotionally.
Pointing to Provincial Road 945, adorned with flags and flowers during the historic final days of April, Mr. Tran Minh Hien affirmed his belief in the renewal of his homeland. He said that the people in the commune always support the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and regulations, and the practical actions of the local government. The people are willing to donate land for road upgrades. This is an affirmation of the trust and solidarity between the Party and the people, following the principle of "the State and the people working together" in the process of building their homeland.
"I often tell my children and grandchildren to strive to study and work hard to contribute to building our homeland, worthy of the heroic tradition that the late Governor and the Gia Nghi militia left for today's generation. Despite my advanced age, I am ready to contribute my efforts to building our homeland," Mr. Tran Minh Hien affirmed.
Open paths, open hopes.
With the support and consensus of the people, the Party Committee and People's Committee of Thanh My Tay commune have been striving to improve the transportation infrastructure system. The Resolution of the Commune Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term identifies the development of transportation infrastructure as one of the local breakthroughs. Based on this, the Commune People's Council approved a resolution on the medium-term public investment plan for the 2026-2030 period from the local budget, identifying 15 projects and works for transportation infrastructure development, with a total capital of 58.8 billion VND.
Mr. Tran Minh Phuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh My Tay commune, said: "The locality has a fairly large area of agricultural land, so the transportation infrastructure system must be invested in comprehensively. Upgrading transportation infrastructure will also help the locality better exploit the fields of trade, services, and tourism in the future." Specifically, in 2026, the People's Committee of the commune will concrete the following routes: North of Canal 10 Chau Phu, west of Canal 7, east of Canal 8, west of Canal 9… and upgrade roads in residential areas in the commune, and reinforce the 500 culvert to prevent landslides.
With Provincial Road 945 (expected to be upgraded to National Highway 8°C) and the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway passing through the area, Thanh My Tay has favorable conditions for transportation connectivity, promoting trade to the provincial center and surrounding areas. Accordingly, the Thanh My Tay Commune Party Committee has developed a plan to implement a breakthrough in completing the synchronous road transport infrastructure, calling for investment in developing transportation infrastructure in adjacent areas, connecting with the aforementioned key transport routes to develop trade and services. Specifically, the commune will upgrade, expand, and build 15 roads of various types, with a total length of 113.15 km; and build 8 new reinforced concrete bridges and culverts, with a total length of 3.12 km. In addition, it will invite investment in developing infrastructure in areas adjacent to the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang Expressway such as wholesale markets and forming a logistics chain.
According to Mr. Tran Minh Phuong, Thanh My Tay commune is interested in attracting investment to develop ecotourism during the flood season. Currently, there is an investor planning to develop the Ho Tram Tourist Area with an area of 70 hectares in the commune. “We hope to develop more satellite tourist destinations to diversify services for tourists. The commune is requesting the province to approve investment in some additional transportation infrastructure projects to help Thanh My Tay better exploit its potential for ecotourism during the flood season in the future,” Mr. Phuong said.
