Unleashing inherent potential and achieving breakthroughs in tourism in Tan Trao.

From a predominantly agricultural area facing many hardships, the historical land of Tan Trao – the birthplace of the August Revolution of 1945 – is undergoing a strong transformation, asserting its position as a bright spot in tourism development linked to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.

Implementing the Provincial Party Committee's Resolution on developing tourism into a key economic sector, the Party Committee, government, and people of Tan Trao commune have determined that tourism is not just an economic sector but must be a "lever" to help people escape poverty and rise to legitimate wealth. Aware of the value of its existing historical relics, the commune has proactively implemented a comprehensive set of solutions to support the people, from planning, preserving, and restoring relics to focusing on maintaining a friendly, clean, and beautiful tourism environment.

The biggest breakthrough in the local development mindset is the shift from purely sightseeing and pilgrimage tourism to deeply exploiting historical, cultural, and ecological tourism based on community participation. In this, the rustic and rich cultural characteristics of the ethnic minority communities in the area are identified as the core resource for attracting and retaining tourists.

To realize this initiative, Tuyen Quang province promptly issued mechanisms and policies to provide direct financial support to households for repairing and upgrading facilities, transforming old, traditional stilt houses into cozy, standard accommodations. To date, over 80 households in Tan Trao commune are operating in the tourism sector, creating jobs and stable income for hundreds of local workers. The service structure in the area is beginning to take shape, with 19 households developing under the Homestay model and over 60 households providing related supporting services.

Ms. Ma Thi Ban, one of the pioneering households in Tan Lap village to offer homestays, shared: "Previously, tourists visiting Tan Trao only came to offer incense, visit the Na Nua hut and the Tan Trao banyan tree, and then left on the same day. But now, with homestays, they choose to stay overnight to eat, drink, and socialize with the locals. Thanks to accommodation and food services, the income of my family, as well as many other households in the village, has increased significantly, and our lives are much more stable than before."

Beyond simply providing accommodation, Mrs. Ban's family and other local households actively act as local tour guides. Guests can directly experience the daily life of the Tay people, such as milling rice, pounding rice, plowing fields, catching fish in the rice paddies, planting crops, and even processing and enjoying agricultural products they have harvested themselves.

Mr. Be Van Du, Head of Tan Lap village, said: Tan Lap village currently has over 180 households with more than 770 inhabitants, of which the Tay ethnic group accounts for up to 90%. Previously, the villagers mainly cultivated wet rice, and their economy was still very unstable. Since the State, the Party Committee, and the local government created conditions and organized training to develop community tourism and experiential tourism services, the people have gained a much better source of income. To date, the average per capita income of the village has reached about 50 million VND/person/year; the number of poor households in the village has decreased rapidly, and currently there are only 6 poor households left in the entire village.

Towards green and sustainable tourism.

Besides homestays, the people of Tan Trao also know how to create unique tourism products closely linked to agricultural life and local culture, such as experiential tourism involving rice planting, fishing in rice paddies, swimming in streams, and boating on the lake.

The district organizes unique festivals such as the Harvest Festival at Tan Trao Temple, the Good Fortune Festival at Hong Thai Temple, and Independence Day celebrations associated with the Tan Trao Festival. The Then singing and khen flute dances of the Tay ethnic group are maintained, improved in quality, and become products to serve tourists.

Another unique aspect of the local tourism economy is the tourism development model based on traditional craft villages in the tea-growing region. It harmoniously combines historical tourism and experiential tourism. In addition to visiting the lush green tea hills, tourists can experience tea picking and processing using traditional methods, and enjoy hot, fragrant cups of tea completely free of charge. This approach both enhances the brand value of Tan Trao tea and effectively stimulates the consumption of local agricultural products.

Comrade Giang Tuan Anh, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tan Trao commune, said: Exploiting potential and promoting tourism development to become an important economic sector of the locality is the top priority. The commune aims to attract over 28,000 overnight visitors by 2030. The commune's Party Committee and government have identified the revolutionary homeland tradition and the advantages of the Tan Trao Special National Historical Site as the strongest internal driving force. From there, they will promote innovation and creativity in economic development while protecting the environment; developing green tourism associated with promoting the value of the Special National Historical Site, such as community tourism and experiential tourism linked to natural landscapes and traditional cultural activities.

For sustainable development, Tan Trao commune focuses on raising awareness and helping people proactively take the lead in creating unique community-based tourism products. When the people truly take ownership of the resources, tourism will become a springboard, enabling Tan Trao to successfully achieve its goals of sustainable poverty reduction and build an increasingly prosperous and beautiful revolutionary homeland.
