On July 4, Dr. Nguyen Viet Chung, Head of the Department of Mental Health, Hospital E ( Hanoi ), said that this person had previously been examined by many specialties such as gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology and gastroscopy but no abnormalities were detected.

His symptoms included rapid heartbeat, acid reflux, epigastric discomfort, dizziness and loss of balance during meetings with superiors. Although he was diagnosed with vestibular disorder, treatment was ineffective.

The prolonged condition caused decreased productivity, difficulty concentrating, and avoidance of social activities. He gradually lost confidence, gave up hobbies, had sleep disorders, and a decline in quality of life.

Dr. Chung diagnosed this as Somatoform Disorder, which is often found in young, intellectual, perfectionist, and anxious people. The patient has physical symptoms such as pain or discomfort that lasts for a long time, but cannot be fully explained by a medical cause (physical illness) or by the direct effects of substances or other mental disorders.

Several factors contribute to the cause of the disease, such as genetics, personality traits, or environmental stress.

Treatment includes cognitive-behavioral therapy to change negative thinking about health. In cases of persistent anxiety, doctors prescribe low-dose antidepressants, combined with instruction in relaxation and emotional regulation skills. Increasing gentle exercise, reducing work stress, and learning to accept imperfection are also recommended.

Dr Chung warns that if not treated promptly, body dysmorphic disorder can lead to long-term depression and seriously affect quality of life. Effective treatment requires coordination between psychiatrists, general practitioners and psychotherapists to ensure a comprehensive approach.
