Changes on Earth after the longest day of the year

Simon Proud, a scientist at the UK's Centre for Earth Observation, shared a video depicting the terminator (the line that separates day and night) as it moves throughout the year.

Changes on Earth after the longest day of the year

The video uses Meteosat weather satellite data to show how sunlight moves across the Earth’s surface throughout the year. It is the result of combining 365 photos, all taken at 6 a.m. every day over the past year, Space reported on June 21.

In the video, you can see how the Earth's changes throughout the year cause days to lengthen or shorten from north to south as the planet orbits the Sun. The Northern Hemisphere experiences the longest day of the year when the planet experiences the summer solstice at 10:57 p.m. on June 21, Hanoi time.

The summer solstice is the time when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most toward the Sun, and therefore receives maximum sunlight. This means it is the longest day for the half of the globe north of the equator, where summer is at its peak. But while the Northern Hemisphere is flooded with sunlight, the Southern Hemisphere experiences its darkest day of winter. After the summer solstice, the days in the Southern Hemisphere begin to grow longer while the days in the Northern Hemisphere grow shorter.

In reality, the Sun does not actually move across the sky. The Sun's motion across the sky is a result of the Earth's rotation on its tilted axis. The arc of the Sun's path changes every day, becoming larger in the Northern Hemisphere from the winter solstice in December to the summer solstice in June and vice versa.

The European Meteosat weather satellite observes the Earth from a geostationary orbit at an altitude of 36,000 km. The Earth is now approaching the September equinox, marking the moment when the two hemispheres receive equal amounts of sunlight.
