Training in France

At the end of May 2025, the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of sports between the Vietnam - France Friendship and Cooperation Association and the Francophone Sports Association took place. According to the plan, Vietnamese sports will select 64 athletes, 20 high-performance sports coaches and 16 coaches and athletes with disabilities to participate in a long-term professional training program in the hexagonal country, throughout the period from 2025 to 2028.

The goal set out when signing the cooperation agreement in the field of sports is that Vietnam aims for the best results in the international arena. In the immediate future, in 2025, the sports that will send representatives to France for training include athletics (1 female 400m athlete, 1 female 800m athlete), road cycling (2 men, 2 women), swimming (2 freestyle swimmers), shooting (2 men, 2 women in pistol; 2 men, 2 women in rifle). Vietnam Paralympic Sports will also send a 4-member team (2 weightlifters, 2 athletics athletes) to train until December 2025.

According to experts, France is a country with strengths in training high achievements in a number of sports and contents. Therefore, if we find good experts and training methods in the core content, the sports of athletics, shooting, road cycling and in the future, archery and badminton will develop.

Of course, the purpose of the training in France is to help athletes of some sports become more confident in competing for Olympic medals. However, in the short term, this is also an opportunity for shooters, cyclists and athletes to hone their skills, thereby bringing home the Gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand later this year.

It is known that in the most recent working session (May 21), the Vietnam Sports Department grasped the training situation and preparation of the sports towards the Southeast Asian arena. Currently, Vietnam sports has completed the registration of the number of sports and the number of events, but has not announced it yet to ensure the professional tactics of each sport. At this time, the preparation plan and performance targets have also been reported by the sports to the leaders of the Sports Department.

The 33rd SEA Games will host 50 sports with a total of 547 medals. Among them, the strong sports of Vietnam such as football, athletics, wushu, swimming, fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, weightlifting, sepak takraw, jujitsu... will still be held. In addition, 2 other sports, shooting and archery, will return (not held in the 32nd SEA Games). Obviously, with the training process in France, archery and shooting athletes will have more professional leverage when entering the competition for the Gold Medal of the Games.

Besides a few key athletes sent to France, athletes in athletics, wrestling, shooting, archery, and wushu also actively practice according to the preparation plan, both domestically and internationally.

What are the targets for the Vietnamese delegation at the SEA Games?

According to statistics, at the 31st SEA Games (2022) at home, Vietnamese sports won the overall first place with 205 Gold Medals, 125 Silver Medals and 116 Bronze Medals. Of which, the 5 sports that brought home the most Gold Medals were athletics (22), wrestling (17), swimming (11), diving (10) and wushu (10). 1 year later, Vietnam ranked first again at the entire congress, with 136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals and 114 Bronze Medals.

However, the upcoming SEA Games will take place in late December 2025 in Thailand – a rival for the number 1 position in regional sports with Vietnam. The host country has also been carefully preparing for over a year. In particular, Thailand strives to win all medals in the competitions. Countries in the region such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia also aim to be in the top 2 of the entire delegation at the 33rd SEA Games.

Based on the internal strength as well as the ambitions of neighboring countries, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation has also narrowed down reasonable targets. Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department) - Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh said that the Vietnamese sports teams will strive to compete to win from 75 to 90 Gold Medals at the 33rd SEA Games, completing the set tasks.

Before the 33rd SEA Games, in the last 2 decades, Vietnamese sports have always been in the top 3 countries. Obviously, finishing in the top 3 of the entire delegation at the 33rd SEA Games is also the goal and motivation that Vietnam is aiming for.

17 key subjects

It is known that 17 key sports of Vietnam will be invested, not only for the SEA Games but also towards Olympic events. The 17 sports include: athletics, swimming, shooting, gymnastics, weightlifting, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, cycling, archery, badminton, judo, wrestling, rowing, wushu, sepak takraw and karate.

The medal results that each core athlete of these 17 sports wins at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games will be a professional basis to help them have the opportunity to be selected to receive focused investment in a long-term roadmap through each cycle towards the Olympic and ASIAD arenas.

Sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh (former Director of Department of High Performance Sports 1, General Department of Sports and Physical Training) emphasized: “We need to see the development of continental and world sports in recent years. The Southeast Asian Sports Council has directed more specifically to organize many sports and events in the Olympic and ASIAD programs to take place at the SEA Games. Vietnamese sports need focused investment in important sports and events in order to go far to achieve the best results at the Olympics or Asian Games.”
