The literature exam for the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City clearly shows the urgent need: to innovate the teaching and learning of literature in high schools.

According to Tuoi Tre, after finishing the literature exam at noon on June 6, many candidates for the 10th grade entrance exam in districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan... left with bright smiles. In the afternoon, for the foreign language exam, candidates gave it a "light" evaluation.

The opening should be exciting.

NCM, taking the exam at Luong The Vinh High School (District 1), said: "I guessed this year the topic would be about love for the homeland, but the reality was far different. However, the exam was open-ended, and the topic was quite close to our 15-year-old age group, so as soon as I read the material, I felt inspired to write.

In part 1, I did it quite quickly because I had practiced reading comprehension skills. Part 2, in my opinion, was a bit difficult. I wrote quite a long essay based on my own reasoning, not sure if it was right or wrong.

Meanwhile, HMT, taking the exam at Truong Cong Dinh Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), compared: "I read the literature exam questions from previous years and I like this year's literature exam better. Simply because I don't need to study the works in the textbooks to be able to do the test.

The questions were open-ended, so I felt quite comfortable answering each question. I used my own experiences to write. Sometimes my parents scolded me, but behind that was love and concern for my children to become good people."

Ms. Pham Thanh Xuan, head of the literature group at Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), commented: "The literature exam questions were in line with the focus that the Department of Education and Training had set out at the beginning of the school year.

The text is moderate, not too long; the questions are clear, not tricky; the topic "On the journey to adulthood" is also very close and suitable for the psychology of students. However, this exam requires candidates to have good problem analysis skills, systematic presentation skills, and idea linking skills"...

Similarly, Ms. Phung Thi Thanh Lai, a literature teacher at the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the topic of this year's exam is close and practical, and at the same time, it assesses and classifies the level of literary experience of students. This is very true to the spirit of the 2018 generaleducation program.

"Regarding the social argumentation question, I really like the "know how to read" topic. To solve this problem, candidates need to have good reading comprehension skills and grasp the core requirement of the topic, which is "know how to recognize good values ​​that are being hidden". During the writing process, candidates need to have a neutral and tactful tone, avoiding judgment or getting caught up in sensational evidence" - Ms. Lai said.

Good differentiation

Commenting on this year's literature exam, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Bao Khoi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Literature at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, assessed that the exam had good differentiation, consistent with the purpose and requirements of the exam. However, the person who created the exam suggested "escape routes" to help students do well in the social discussion section.

"The exam topic evokes many valuable perceptions for students, helping them to love and bond more with their families, to discover and clearly distinguish true values ​​in life. In addition, students are also oriented towards specific, practical, correct and age-appropriate tasks. This has also contributed to clarifying the goal of forming and developing students' abilities and qualities in current education in general and literature in particular" - commented Mr. Khoi.

From the above exam, Mr. Khoi believes that the requirement for the 10th grade entrance exam review in particular and the teaching and learning of literature in general is to orient teaching skills - practicing skills becomes an urgent requirement.

"Although the test only focuses on assessing reading and writing skills, reading must be associated with many types and subtypes of text, and writing must be associated with many different types of essays/texts. Therefore, training students' skills must be associated with each specific format.

For example, in teaching reading skills, teachers first need to systematize the necessary reading comprehension knowledge, based on the requirements of the 2018 literature program to build a system of reading comprehension questions corresponding to each type/subtype of text, from which they can implement teaching and practicing reading comprehension skills/answering reading comprehension questions for students" - Mr. Khoi said.

Still a little regretful

After the literature exam yesterday morning (June 6), many students taking the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City felt happy to have completed the test, the exam questions were close to reality but "still had some regrets".

Linh Dan, a student at Truong Thanh Secondary School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), a candidate for the 10th grade entrance exam this year, said she did quite well on the literature exam. For Linh Dan, the reading comprehension part of the poem Con Nam by Te Hanh is a poem rich in emotion.

"The poem has close, familiar content about loving family affection, the relationship between parents and children. I think that the maturity of every child is thanks to the love of their parents, they all grow up in the love of their family, so the poem gives me many emotions," Linh Dan shared.

Part II of the exam is "reading and understanding argumentative texts and writing social argumentative essays". Hoang Luong, a student at Hong Bang Secondary School (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City), said that he found this exam very close to students' real lives.

"This social essay helps us identify information on social media platforms. Understand more deeply the value of true and false information, express our own opinions to become more mature. I did the assignment and hope to get a score of 7-8", Hoang Luong said.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Uy, a literature teacher at Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), commented that this year's 10th grade entrance exam essay is consistent with the 2018 general education program, in which the essay focuses on promoting qualities and abilities, not requiring students to memorize but requiring students to develop their creative thinking ability.

"The first highlight is that the test maintains the connection between the topics and sentences and has a consistent viewpoint in the test making of Ho Chi Minh City up to now. This creates a connection and evokes good emotions for students when doing the test.

The second highlight of the HCM City 10th grade entrance exam this year was the social argumentation question. The exam touched on things that 15-year-olds need to recognize, which is to distinguish between truth and falsehood in information, to help them become more mature," commented Mr. Uy.

However, for many candidates and teachers, this year's 10th grade literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City still leaves some regrets. One teacher frankly said that the exam was "too safe" and lacked highlights.

"The exam questions of Ho Chi Minh City in previous years were in the direction of "innovation". This year is the first year of taking the exam according to the 2018 general education program, but the only difference is the language in the questions.

Moreover, this year Ho Chi Minh City has a milestone of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country. We have had some exciting days of celebration, but the 10th grade entrance exam for Ho Chi Minh City students does not reflect this rhythm of life, does not sow in their souls another seed of history. As a literature teacher, I find it regrettable," said a literature teacher.
