Many Chinese airlines are rushing to recruit flight attendants as the tourism market recovers thanks to Beijing's lifting of strict Covid-19 prevention regulations.
According to Reuters, data from flight tracking app Flight Master shows that domestic capacity in China has exceeded 2019 levels since mid-March. As the peak season approaches, Chinese airlines are gradually reopening more international routes.
For example, Air China will operate international routes as before the pandemic, including Beijing-Rome (Italy), Beijing- Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Chengdu-London (UK).
Hainan Airlines plans to hire more than 1,000 flight attendants this year and has received more than 20,000 applications, while China Southern Airlines plans to select one-third of the more than 21,000 applications. Xiamen Airlines and Spring Airlines have also launched similar recruitment campaigns.
Before the pandemic, the success rate of selection was about 10% of total applications. Reuters quoted an assessment from independent expert on China's aviation industry Li Hanming, stating that the job of flight attendant is still very attractive to young people in this country because it brings a fairly good income compared to the general level and allows them to travel around the world for free.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), about 11,000 flight attendants in China have quit their jobs during the pandemic, down about 11% from 108,955 in 2019. However, the country's aviation industry has not been able to fill the vacancies quickly. Even though the number of job seekers is increasing, airlines will still have difficulty recruiting because after this process, flight attendant training courses often last a year.
“This situation may slow down the increase in service capacity and push up airfares in the coming time,” said Mr. Li Hanming.
