Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen Monastery – Buddhist landscape in Tam Dao

Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen Monastery belongs to the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect, located in Vinh Phuc province, 85 km from Hanoi . The Zen Monastery systematically trains Buddhism, creating conditions for Vietnamese Buddhism to develop both in breadth and depth.

Along with Truc Lam Da Lat Zen Monastery and Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen Monastery, Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen Monastery is one of the three largest Zen monasteries in Vietnam. The Zen monastery is located next to the scenic relic site of Tay Thien ancient temple (including Tay Thien pagoda, Tay Thien Lang Thi Tieu National Mother Temple, Co temple, Cau temple, Thong temple, and Bac waterfall).

This is one of the earliest places where Buddhism originated in Vietnam. Around the 3rd century, a monk named Khuong Tang Hoi stopped here to spread Buddhism. Zen was initiated by monk Khuong Tang Hoi, who later brought Zen to China to spread during the reign of Sun Quan (247).

The 6th Hung King, Hung Chieu Vuong, went to Thien An Pagoda (the Zen monastery today was built on the foundation of this pagoda) on the top of Tam Dao Mountain to pray for children. When he returned, he met Lang Thi Tieu and took her as his wife. She was a talented strategist who helped King Hung fight the enemy and protect the country.

Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen Monastery began construction in 2004. During the groundbreaking ceremony, countless bricks and broken tiles with patterns from the Tran Dynasty were found on the ancient temple grounds. After more than 15 months of construction, the project was inaugurated on November 25, 2005.

The construction speed was so fast because of the participation of thousands of people, including many artisans from craft villages across the country: carpenters from Ha Tay, Bac Ninh ; stonemasons from Non Nuoc, Ninh Binh; masons from Nam Dinh, Hanoi.

The main hall of the Zen monastery is located in the middle, 17m high, with 4 pillars, each pillar is nearly 1m in diameter, 600 Buddhists and visitors can meditate or listen to Buddhist teachings at the same time. In the main hall, there is a statue of Buddha, with two parallel sentences: "Deep virtue comes from sowing causes and reaping results, Full enlightenment is imbued by Prajna and Buddhism shows the way to leave delusion and return to enlightenment, Zen has no way to directly realize the truth".

To the left of the main hall is the bell tower, to the right is the drum tower. The drum is made from Gia Lai forest jackfruit wood, with a diameter of up to 1.5m, 2m long; the bell weighs 2 tons.

Behind the main hall is the ancestral house worshiping the statues of the Three Patriarchs of Truc Lam (Tran Nhan Tong, Phap Loa and Huyen Quang). The Buddha statues in the main hall and the ancestral house are all made of sandstone, which is durable over time.

The Zen monastery also has a dining hall, a bookstore selling Buddhist scriptures and souvenirs, a library, and an inner courtyard including a monk's quarters, a meditation hall, and a dining hall. The Zen monastery has about 40 rooms for guests to stay at the temple to study Buddhist scriptures.

At the beginning of the year, local people and tourists from all over love to make pilgrimages to Truc Lam Tay Thien Zen Monastery to pray for a year of good luck, health and peace.
