According to legend, Lac Long Quan and Au Co gave birth to a sac of one hundred eggs that hatched into one hundred children. After that, fifty children followed their mother to the mountains, and fifty children followed their father to the sea. The eldest son was crowned Hung King, and succeeded to the throne, founding the Van Lang nation. Through 18 generations of Hung Kings, our country was formed from the dawn of history.

To commemorate the Hung Kings' merits in founding the country, since the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, the death anniversary has been solemnly celebrated. In 1917, King Khai Dinh officially chose the 10th day of the third lunar month as the death anniversary of the Hung Kings. Since 2007, the death anniversary of the Hung Kings has been recognized as a national holiday, demonstrating the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source" and the sacred national spirit of every Vietnamese person.
