Working scene.
This morning (November 7), Comrade Nguyen Quynh Thien, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, along with leaders of a number of provincial departments and branches, had a meeting and worked with a delegation from the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ); to discuss support activities and strengthen linkages in the eastern coastal sub-region of the Mekong Delta (MD) in developing the coconut industry under the Mekong Delta Climate Change Adaptation Project (MCRP-GIZ).

The GIZ delegation was led by Dr. Patric Schlager - Head of Urban Development, Infrastructure and Regional Connectivity, MCRP-GIZ Project.
At the meeting, Vice President Nguyen Quynh Thien and Dr. Patric Schlager discussed support activities to strengthen the linkage of the Eastern coastal sub-region of the Mekong Delta in the development of the coconut industry under the MCRP-GIZ Project.

Dr. Patric Schlager said: GIZ has been implementing activities to support the strengthening of the linkage of the Eastern coastal sub-region of the Mekong Delta in the field of coconut industry development, in order to promote the coordination and cooperation mechanism between the four provinces: Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long, in order to improve the investment, business and development environment more favorable for the coconut industry.
The project has carried out a number of studies, consulted relevant departments, branches and units, and held discussions with managers and experts in the coconut sector in 04 provinces; based on the results of the studies and consultations in 04 provinces, a number of ideas and common activities to promote cooperation in developing the coconut industry have been drafted by the project's expert group.
Comrade Lam Huu Phuc, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, spoke about the province's tourism potential.
At the working session, the GIZ delegation asked for the province's policy on which model the province would take the lead in participating in and choose the focal unit to implement the model: (1) Linking to build coconut tourism tours; (2) Building a database for the coconut industry; (3) Improving production linkages to provide quality coconut varieties; (4) Implementing a model of information sharing and cooperation in research and technology transfer for the coconut industry.
Comrade Huynh Kim Nhan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, informed the delegation: the whole province currently has 27,359 hectares of coconut trees, equivalent to 6.96 million trees; concentrated in Cang Long, Tieu Can, Cau Ke districts. Of which, the area of coconut trees bearing fruit is 23,541 hectares, accounting for 82.2% of the planted area, with an average yield of 16.67 tons/ha, and an output of 392,399 tons, equivalent to about 327 million fruits. In particular, there are about 1,277 hectares of wax coconut (including 31.1 hectares of embryo wax coconut). Of which, 903 hectares are bearing fruit, with an output of 3.2 million fruits/year (the proportion of waxy fruits is from 25-30%/normal wax coconut; over 75%/embryo cultured wax coconut).
Currently, the province has 5,276 hectares of organic coconut that meet EU and USDA standards; of which, 388.7 hectares meet 3 standards (EU, USDA, China) and 20.56 hectares meet 4 standards (EU, USDA, JAS, Canada), accounting for 19.3% of the province's total coconut area. There are 8 enterprises, production facilities, and cooperatives that are linked to consume organic coconut products at prices 5-10% higher than normal coconut prices, depending on the market.
Tra Vinh province has been approved by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China to grant 09 growing area codes (area of 1,242ha) and 02 export packing facility codes after the Protocol was signed.

Tra Vinh coconut industry has also focused on exploiting OCOP deep-processed products and typical rural industrial products. Enterprises in the province have gradually affirmed their position and directly exported products to demanding markets (Canada, EU, Switzerland) while still maintaining traditional markets (domestic, China).
Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien thanked GIZ for supporting Tra Vinh province in many areas with good results. At the same time, he highly appreciated GIZ's idea of proposing 04 support models for the eastern provinces of the Mekong Delta in linking and developing the coconut industry, including Tra Vinh.

Regarding the cooperation proposals of the GIZ delegation, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee agreed with the proposal on the coordination mechanism for implementation; assigned departments, branches, Tra Vinh University... to coordinate with GIZ to discuss and agree on the cooperation procedures and roadmap. Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien affirmed: the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee and departments are always responsible and accompany each other in the coordination process.
