Pym was shared by fans after eliminating the "Red Devils" |
At 30, Pym made some crucial saves in the game, preventing Man Utd from completing a comeback and forcing the game into penalties. He even starred in the penalty shootout, saving Matheus Cunha's shot to keep Grimsby's hopes alive ahead of the decisive shootout.
Although that was the only save Pym made, Bryan Mbeumo missed a second shortly afterwards, handing Grimsby the tie. The most memorable moment came in the post-match interview, when Pym candidly shared that he could not fully enjoy the victory because of his divided loyalties.
“I still can’t believe it,” he told Sky Sports. “I’m a Man Utd fan, so it’s a bit frustrating. But nights like this are what football is all about. It’s fantastic.” Pym only joined Grimsby Town last month, signing a two-year deal after leaving Mansfield Town on a free transfer earlier in the summer.
According to Pym, he should have done better in the penalty shootout. Pym modestly said: "I made a save to keep the team in the game, the rest was the work of my teammates. It was great."
Meanwhile, for teammate and goalscorer Tyrell Warren, the victory was even more special. He grew up in Man Utd's youth system, playing alongside Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, but was released in 2019 before rebuilding his career in the lower leagues of England.
