Vietnam established diplomatic relations with Romania in 1950. Between 1950 and 1989, Romania provided aid and loans to Vietnam to develop several economic sectors. After Romania changed its political regime in late 1989, the two countries continued to develop their relationship and cooperate in many areas.
Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Romania has grown continuously, doubling from over $200 million in 2018 to over $400 million in 2022.
Vietnam's main exports include coffee, seafood, pepper, textiles, leather shoes, and computer components. Romania's main imports are chemicals, fertilizers, construction steel, plastic pellets, oil and gas drilling equipment, and wood products. Since 2010, Romania has been ranked among Vietnam's major seafood export markets, with approximately 12,000 tons exported annually.
As of the end of 2022, Romania had 5 active direct investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered investment capital of US$1.56 million, ranking 42nd out of 143 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.
