Amid rising tensions between the US and Ukraine, on March 1, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed holding a large-scale summit between the US and its European allies to discuss current challenges, especially the Ukraine issue.
The proposal came after a tense "fiery" meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on February 28, when Mr. Trump publicly criticized his Ukrainian counterpart's attitude of disrespect towards the US and not being ready for peace .
Prime Minister Meloni stressed concerns about divisions within the Western bloc, warning that any disagreement would weaken the alliance and play into the hands of forces that want to see the decline of Western civilization.
President Trump and European allies have been at odds over the Ukraine peace plan. The Trump administration is reportedly considering cutting 20,000 US troops in Europe. If Britain and the EU continue to make things difficult for the Ukraine plans, Trump could cut 50,000 troops or more. In addition, Washington has hinted at withdrawing from NATO.
