Promoting the transition to clean fuels

According to the roadmap for applying biofuel blending ratios approved by the Prime Minister, from June 1, 2026, the Vietnamese petroleum market will witness a significant change. All currently circulating mineral gasoline, including RON 95 gasoline, will be replaced with E10 biofuel. This decision aims to protect the environment while contributing to solving the national energy security problem in the new era, creating a foundation for sustainable growth.

In recent times, E5 bioethanol fuel has become familiar to many consumers. Therefore, increasing the ethanol blending ratio to 10% and applying it across the market is a noteworthy step. The most important reason for this change is Vietnam's commitment at international forums to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The transportation sector is currently one of the major sources of carbon emissions.

The use of E10 instead of conventional gasoline is considered a viable solution that does not require people to switch to electric vehicles immediately. This is seen as a necessary stepping stone in the energy transition process, suitable for current practical conditions.

Besides environmental benefits, E10 gasoline is also significant for energy security. In the context of frequently fluctuating world oil prices due to geopolitical conflicts, securing 10% of fuel from domestic sources such as cassava will help reduce import pressure.

Furthermore, this transformation also opens up a sustainable path for the agricultural sector. The increasing demand for ethanol will require a stable supply of cassava, thereby forming a closed value chain from farmers to ethanol production plants and petroleum businesses.

If implemented effectively, this would be a prime example of a circular economy model, contributing to raising incomes for people in many disadvantaged areas, especially in the midland and mountainous regions.

Although the benefits are clear, the roadmap from now until June 2026 still faces many challenges. First and foremost is consumer sentiment. Many car owners, especially those who own luxury vehicles, are still concerned that biofuels may affect the technical details of their engines.

Although experts assert that most vehicles manufactured after 2000 are fully compatible with E10, authorities still need to intensify communication efforts to ensure people are fully aware of the advantages of this fuel.

In addition, there are issues of supply and cost. Domestic ethanol production plants need support to operate at full capacity, ensuring competitive prices compared to imported products. If the price of E10 gasoline is not attractive enough compared to the previous conventional gasoline, this roadmap may face market resistance, affecting the overall implementation progress.

Switching to E10 gasoline from June 1, 2026, is a correct and appropriate decision in line with the green development trend.

However, for this initiative to achieve the expected results, flexible management policies from relevant authorities are needed, along with the consensus and support of the people. When the State, businesses, and society work together, the goal of building a green economy will soon become a reality.
