Promoting sustainable rice development between Vietnam and African countries

(ABO) As part of the series of events of the Vietnam - Hau Giang International Rice Festival 2023, on the afternoon of December 12, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) coordinated with the People's Committee of Hau Giang province to organize the Vietnam - Africa Policy Dialogue Workshop: South-South Cooperation to Support Food System Transformation.

Attending the workshop were Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan; Secretary of Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee Nghiem Xuan Thanh; Permanent Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen; together with representatives of Central Ministries and branches; Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); International Rice Research Institute (IRRI); representatives of a number of international organizations, scientists, businesses and representatives of agricultural agencies of a number of African countries and the agricultural sector of a number of provinces and cities across the country.

Sharing at the workshop, Hau Giang Provincial Party Secretary Nghiem Xuan Thanh affirmed that the locality always joins hands to develop sustainable agriculture for global food security.

Speaking at the workshop, Secretary of Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee Nghiem Xuan Thanh said: The workshop is an opportunity to share experiences and promote mechanisms for South-South cooperation in developing science and technology suitable to African conditions; developing rice trade, connecting agricultural food value chains and global food security.

Delegates had thematic dialogues and discussed challenges, opportunities, as well as the role of South-South cooperation in the past and future directions.

In addition, this event will mark an important step in cooperation between Vietnam and international organizations on scientific, technical and institutional coordination in South-South Cooperation to support food system transformation. This also demonstrates the commitment of the Vietnamese Government, including Hau Giang, to always join hands in developing sustainable agriculture for global food security.

At the workshop, many international agricultural organizations of the United Nations, the United States, Asia, and Vietnam shared in-depth mechanisms to promote cooperation in science and technology suitable to African conditions; strengthen the connection of the South-South agricultural and food value chain; promote South-South cooperation for rice trade and global food security; technical cooperation between Vietnam and African countries in efforts to transform the food system and share experiences in promoting sustainable rice development in South-South cooperation from the "Green Innovation Centers - GIC" Project.

In addition to presenting papers, the workshop also held thematic dialogues and discussions, providing multi-dimensional perspectives on food system transformation, including: Challenges, opportunities, as well as the role of South-South Cooperation in narrowing technical knowledge gaps.
