(Dan Tri) - A restaurant in Guangdong province (China) caused controversy when it did not list the prices of dishes in numbers but classified them according to education level, from "illiterate" for the cheapest dish to "doctor" for the most expensive dish.
According to Shangyou News , a restaurant located in Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province (China) specializing in Cantonese cuisine , is becoming the center of public attention when it classifies the prices of dishes according to education level.
On the menu, customers will see that the prices of dishes are not listed in numbers as usual. Instead, the restaurant has creatively divided the prices by educational level, with the lowest level being "illiterate" and the highest being "doctor".
Specifically, the cheapest dish at the restaurant costs 5 yuan (17,000 VND) and is labeled "bai ding", which means illiterate in Chinese. There are also other dishes such as 10 yuan (34,000 VND) classified as "kindergarten". The 13 yuan (45,000 VND) dish is "primary school".
The 16 yuan (55,000 VND) dish is labeled "junior high school". The 18 yuan (63,000 VND) dish is "high school". The 20 yuan (70,000 VND) dish is "college" level.
The level of "bachelor's degree from a first-class university" corresponds to a dish costing 26 yuan (90,000 VND). But if a customer chooses a dish costing 23 yuan (80,000 VND), it will be at the level of "bachelor's degree from a second-class university". Similarly, "bachelor's degree from a third-class university" costs 22 yuan (76,000 VND).
The "master's degree" dish costs 28 yuan (97,000 VND) and the "doctor's degree" dish costs 29 yuan (100,000 VND).
At the top of the menu is the title "academician," which refers to members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The prestigious title is considered the pinnacle of scientific achievement in China. The restaurant also included the title in its menu, listing dishes priced at 32 yuan (111,000 VND) as the highest level.
Recently, when a group of guests came to eat at a restaurant and were surprised to see a strange menu, they shared it on social media. Quickly, the images in the menu went viral on many platforms, receiving many mixed reviews.
“This is a blatant form of educational discrimination. It will offend many individuals with lower educational backgrounds,” one commenter on Baidu wrote.
"If I choose a dish that costs 5 yuan, does that mean I am illiterate? On the contrary, people with low education levels cannot choose dishes with high degrees?", one customer was upset.
However, some other opinions said that they found the menu quite creative and not an issue that needs to be debated.
"Think of this as a unique restaurant business idea. We should encourage creativity and not be too sensitive," one Weibo user commented.
Faced with many conflicting opinions, the restaurant representative recently said that they have applied this unique menu system for many years in business and have not seen any customer dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, staff from the Zhanjiang City Market Supervision and Administration Bureau also said that there are no specific regulations on how prices are listed, as long as they are truthful.
"Judging food based on educational level is a market behavior and we cannot conclude whether this case is right or wrong," said a member of the inspection team.
However, due to backlash from the public, the restaurant recently removed the strange menu.
