Recently, Ms. Ngoc Man (residing in Phu Tho ward, Ho Chi Minh City) received a call from a woman claiming to be from the water supply company.
This person informed her family that the water quota would be increased from 4m³ to 6m³/person/month. Then, this person asked Ms. Ngoc Man to add her on Zalo to guide her on how to increase the water quota.
"When I made friends, I was given roundabout instructions, sent a link to provide information about my bank account number, ID photo, and water bill payment information to increase the quota. I saw signs of high-tech fraud, so I turned off my phone and blocked the stranger's number," Ms. Man shared.
According to Saigon Water Corporation (SAWACO), the unit recently promoted communication and encouraged customers to use the SAWACO CSKH application to improve service quality.
Taking advantage of this, some people impersonate water supply staff and approach customers using many tricks to scam them.
Specifically, these subjects called customers with urgent content, asking to install the SAWACO CSKH application immediately according to the instructions. Then, they sent strange links via Zalo, SMS or email, asking to provide personal information such as bank account number, ID card, water bill payment information.
After customers install the application or interact according to the initial instructions, the subjects continue to make friends via Zalo to send more fake links.
The content of these links requires customers to provide payment transaction images, link their bank accounts to the SAWACO CSKH application, and pay water bills directly via the link. They even ask customers to scan their ID card codes to re-register for water usage, with the enticement that their water usage quota will be increased to 6m³/person/month.
Regarding online fraud, Ho Chi Minh City Police advise people to be careful with calls from strangers, people claiming to work for the police, prosecutor's office, bank employees, local police, electricity employees, and water supply company employees.
According to the police, many people were lured into installing applications containing malicious code and had a lot of money secretly stolen from their accounts.
After taking control of the victim's phone, the subjects also tried to exploit information in the contact list, photo library, private video clips... to control, threaten or continue to lure other victims who are acquaintances in the contact list.
Not only does this malware collect data to steal money, it also intercepts messages and allows hackers to control victims' accounts (Facebook, Email, Zalo...).
Therefore, people should absolutely not install applications from external websites or portals, but should only install them from the CH Play and Apple Store app stores. At the same time, do not scan QR codes, click on strange links or provide passwords or personal information to strangers.
