Staff of the Military Logistics Science Research Institute (Logistics Academy) on the canned meat production line.

In 2024, while on a business trip to the Logistics Department of the 3rd Army Corps (now the Logistics-Technical Department of the 34th Army Corps), I was informed by the comrades in the Steering Committee that one of the successes of the 3rd Army Corps' TC-23 exercise was the great effort of the Logistics sector, including the organization of a field canned meat production line, ensuring good rations for the troops.

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Viet Duc, then Assistant Supply Officer of the Logistics Department of the 3rd Army Corps, stated: The 3rd Army Corps received the canned meat production line from the Logistics Academy in May 2010. After training and guidance from officers and staff of the Logistics Science Research Institute of the Logistics Academy, officers and staff of the Supply Department of the 3rd Army Corps Logistics Bureau quickly mastered the canned meat production line and have now produced three types of cans: minced meat, whole meat, and canned fish, with an average annual output of 72,000 cans. When there is an unexpected mission, the army corps' logistics sector ensures the production of larger quantities and the mobile installation of the production line during field training, exercises, and other long-term missions...

Staff from the Military Supply Department (Logistics and Technical Department, 34th Army Corps) operate a canned meat production line transferred by the Logistics Academy.

When I shared the story of the Logistics Academy's transfer of canned food production technology to other units with Colonel, Dr. Hoang The Hung, Director of the Military Logistics Science Research Institute, he told me: "The research project on designing and installing a canned meat production line was conducted from 2009-2010 by Ms. Bui Thi Thanh (now Lieutenant Colonel, PhD), an officer of the Military Science Research Department of the Institute. The results of the project were tested at the Logistics Academy, and the technology was transferred to the Logistics Department of Military Region 2 and the 3rd Army Corps."

Based on the clear effectiveness of its practical application, in 2011, the Institute developed and expanded the project into a sectoral-level research topic: "Research on the organization of canned meat production at the processing station of an infantry division," led by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Truong Son, then Director of the Institute of Military Logistics Science Research. The project's results were highly appreciated by the General Department of Logistics, General Staff, and authorized the equipping of units at the division level and equivalent with centralized processing stations. The total investment for a production line, including all equipment such as meat grinders, mincers, sealing machines, and sterilization autoclaves, ranges from 150 to 200 million VND. The canned meat production process follows a closed-loop system, including: raw material preparation; grinding and mixing of raw materials; deaeration, canning, sealing; and sterilization.

To date, the Institute has transferred the technology for producing canned meat to many units under military regions, corps, and divisions... The canned meat production line transferred by the Logistics Academy has been effectively applied, contributing to ensuring good logistics readiness for combat, field training, exercises, disaster prevention and mitigation; especially in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, during the 2020-2022 period...

Canned meat products from the Logistics Academy.

Colonel, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Truong Son, former Head of the Military Science Department and former Director of the Institute of Military Logistics Science Research (Military Logistics Academy), stated: “When I was Director, I organized field surveys for officers and researchers and found that, basically, the centralized processing stations at the division level and equivalent have the capacity to produce canned meat themselves, bringing practical benefits such as utilizing raw materials from livestock farming, ensuring food safety and hygiene, and enabling units to proactively manage their food reserves… From there, we developed a plan and process for canned meat production applicable to the stations. Each centralized processing station needs to have a production area and storage area with a minimum area of 18m² ; invest in some equipment to serve production such as meat grinders, mincing machines, can sealing machines, and sterilization autoclaves. The raw materials for canned meat production are pork and some spices readily available at the unit and purchased from the market. In the technological process, Sterilization, ensuring food safety and hygiene, and preserving the meat for a long time while maintaining its flavor and nutritional value... were the focus, so we concentrated on solving this problem and succeeded. As a result, the "Logistics Academy canned meat" brand has gained increasing prestige among units throughout the army.
