On the morning of January 3rd, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy held a conference to summarize its work in 2024 and plan for 2025.

In 2024, the socio-economic development of the country in general and the Industry and Trade sector in particular took place against a backdrop of continued major and unpredictable global changes, with many intertwined opportunities and challenges. The trend of deglobalization was on the rise, and protectionist policies reappeared in many countries in various forms.

On the morning of January 3rd, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy held its conference to summarize the achievements of 2024 and outline the tasks for 2025.

However, global investment is trending strongly toward the digital sector, with multinational companies in the digital field growing rapidly and changing the nature of cross-border investment and trade.

Meanwhile, e-commerce continues to grow at nearly three times the rate of traditional commerce globally, contributing approximately 20% to total retail sales of goods and services by 2024. Southeast Asia continues to be the region with the highest e-commerce and digital economy growth rate in the world.

Domestically, Vietnam's e-commerce sector continues to maintain impressive growth rates, reaching 18-25% annually. By 2024, the e-commerce market size is expected to surpass US$25 billion, a 20% increase compared to 2023, accounting for approximately 9% of the total retail sales of goods and consumer services nationwide.

E-commerce accounts for two-thirds of the value of Vietnam's digital economy. The growth rate of e-commerce and Vietnam's digital economy continues to be a solid double-digit increase, ranking among the top 10 countries with the fastest e-commerce growth in the world, creating momentum for the development of the digital economy and leading digital transformation in businesses.

Despite the achievements, state management of e-commerce still faces difficulties and obstacles such as: controlling sellers on e-commerce platforms; controlling counterfeit goods, pirated goods, prohibited goods, goods infringing intellectual property rights, and substandard goods…

Based on the achievements made, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy aims to continue implementing strategies more effectively and substantively. The focus will be on perfecting institutional and legal reforms regarding e-commerce through the development of a specialized law on e-commerce; a national e-commerce development master plan for the period 2026-2030; and continued coordination with ministries and agencies to strengthen management, supervision, and enforcement of e-commerce laws.

In the coming period, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will continue to improve and enhance the quality of its staff, promote the role of mass organizations to effectively fulfill its assigned political tasks, and build an honest, proactive, and service-oriented organization for the people and businesses.
