On November 14th, the People's Committee of Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province, announced an outbreak of African swine fever in Xuan Dong commune and implemented measures to prevent and control the disease.
Accordingly, the Cho Gao district authorities implemented measures to contain the outbreak, coordinated with relevant agencies to set up quarantine checkpoints, and guided and controlled the movement, transportation, slaughter, and trading of pork in the area during the outbreak.
On the same day, the People's Committee of Xuan Dong commune established four quarantine checkpoints at the entrances to the commune and at intersections bordering other communes; ordered two ferry crossings on the Cho Gao canal to stop transporting pigs; and educated the people to raise awareness about the disease, absolutely prohibiting the "selling off" of sick pigs. In particular, all sluice gates and dams were closed to prevent the disease from flowing into the Tien River and Cho Gao canal, thus preventing its spread to other localities.
Previously, from October 21st to the present, African swine fever has rapidly spread in Xuan Dong commune with 15 outbreaks. The commune has a total pig population of over 6,000, and to date, more than 247 pigs out of a herd of over 840 have been infected. Authorities have culled over 300 pigs weighing more than 16,200 kg.
Also in October, in Long An province, authorities in Tan Hung district discovered a pig farm where 10 pigs were sick and had died. Inspection and sample testing revealed the presence of the African swine fever virus. Authorities destroyed all remaining pigs (total weight 4,620 kg); disinfection and sterilization were carried out at the affected farm and surrounding areas.
