Synchronize multiple solutions

The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province has just issued a Plan to synchronously implement solutions to prevent and control African swine fever, in order to control and minimize the risk of widespread disease spread.

According to the plan, the province will focus on implementing many key measures. First of all, the specialized sector will strengthen disease surveillance, regularly monitor and closely grasp the epidemic developments to detect early and promptly handle new outbreaks.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine is assigned to collect samples for virus testing and differential diagnosis for herds of pigs showing signs of suspicion or pigs that may have come into contact with sick pigs. All sick pigs, pigs that die from the disease or samples that test positive for the pathogen will be destroyed according to regulations to prevent the source of infection as much as possible.

At the same time, the province has increased the activities of interdisciplinary inspection teams to control the transportation of pigs and pig products into and out of epidemic areas. Authorities have been mobilized to set up 24/7 disease control checkpoints and tighten pig transportation to prevent the spread of the disease.

The province also deployed vaccination for all healthy pigs in 11 communes and wards in the buffer zone, helping to create active immunity and contain the disease, preventing it from spreading further. It is expected that 11,133 pigs from 3,050 households will be vaccinated in this period.

Sanitation, disinfection and sterilization work was strongly deployed in communes with epidemics and threatened areas (including 15 communes). General cleaning and disinfection were carried out once a day in the first week, then three times a week in the next two weeks, with a total of 13 times, expected to be carried out for 59,722 households. In the buffer zone of 11 communes and wards, sanitation, disinfection and sterilization were maintained regularly once a week until the end of the epidemic, with an estimated participation of 9,129 households.

In addition, the authorities have stepped up propaganda to help farmers understand the danger of the disease, not throw pig carcasses into the environment, and actively monitor the health of their pigs every day. When detecting unusual signs, people must immediately report to specialized agencies for instructions on proper handling; at the same time, strictly follow recommended disease prevention and control measures.

Tighten slaughter control

According to Vinh Long Provincial Police, on November 4 and 6, functional forces including the Police, Economic Department, veterinary officers of Nhuan Phu Tan commune and representatives of the Hamlet People's Committee inspected many slaughterhouses in the area.

At the premises of Mr. NMS (Vinh Tri hamlet), Mr. PVH and Mr. D.DK (Tich Khanh hamlet), and Ms. TKC (Tai Dai hamlet), the inspection team discovered pork that smelled, was suspected of being infected with disease, had no quarantine mark, and was of unknown origin. The working group made a record and documents to destroy all the pork and invited the relevant individuals to work according to the law.

Mr. Nguyen Van Vu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhuan Phu Tan Commune, said: "We have destroyed everything. In fact, the sanctions have not been strong enough for a long time. Even when administrative sanctions are imposed, violators still accept to pay the fines. There are cases where they are punished twice. The number of violations is not large, but if it is allowed to continue, it is unacceptable."

African swine fever is an extremely dangerous infectious disease that can cause up to 100% mortality in pigs and spread rapidly over a large area. Although a vaccine has been approved for circulation, vaccination rates are still low and vaccination targets are limited. Many small-scale farms have not fully applied biosecurity measures, while the constantly changing weather creates favorable conditions for the disease to arise and spread.

Faced with that situation, drastic and synchronous implementation of epidemic prevention solutions is extremely urgent to minimize the risk of spread, protect pig herds and stabilize livestock production in the province.
