Pig prices at some markets have begun to increase slightly, signaling a year-end increase cycle, in the context of African swine fever causing much damage in provinces across the country.

Ms. Dang Thi Bich Lien, a trader at the central market in Bac Gia Nghia ward, said that from now until the end of the year, the price of live pigs will continue to increase, but not dramatically.

For the past few weeks, the price of live pigs and pork has started to increase slightly, and many people predict that it may increase further from now until the end of the year. On October 21, at some markets in Nhan Co commune and the central market in Bac Gia Nghia ward, retail pork prices have started to increase. Specifically, retail pork prices have increased by about 5,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last month. Currently, pork belly is 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg, pork belly without ribs, baby ribs is 150,000 VND/kg, thigh and shoulder meat is about 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a trader at Nhan Co market, the price of live pigs has increased by about 5,000 VND/kg compared to 2 months ago, so she has also had to increase the price of meat sold. Currently, the types of meat she sells fluctuate around 130,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 10,000 VND/kg compared to 2 months ago.

At the central market in Bac Gia Nghia ward, Ms. Dang Thi Bich Lien, a pork trader for over 20 years, said: The price of pork at her store has also increased slightly over the past 2 weeks. Ms. Lien said: "For about 10 days now, the price of pork has started to increase, initially by a few or three prices, then by 5-7 prices, meaning each kilogram of meat has increased by about 7,000 VND."

Currently, the price of pork she imports is at 105,000 VND/kg, the finished product sold fluctuates around 130,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. She believes that the price has increased slightly, signaling the entry into an increasing cycle at the end of the year, when market demand is high. Ms. Lien commented that the increase in pork prices at the end of this year is understandable when African swine fever and storms and floods have recently caused quite a lot of damage in many provinces, especially in the North. For Lam Dong , although African swine fever has not caused much damage, it has more or less affected the price of pork in general.

Explaining the gradual increase in the price of live pigs and pork at the end of the year, many farmers and traders said that it was not surprising, because according to the market rules, at the end of the year, when demand increases but supply is not abundant, the price will increase.

The increase in live pigs and pork is considered a positive signal for local farmers. The pig farming situation in Lam Dong since the beginning of the year has recorded a fairly large increase. Specifically, the province's pig herd in mid-October was over 1.4 million, reaching 97.6% of the yearly plan. Although African swine fever has occurred in many localities, it is mainly on a household scale with 1,555 pigs destroyed.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Lam, village 1A, Quang Tan commune, his family is currently raising pigs on a farm scale with a herd of nearly 100 pigs. In the context of increasing livestock materials, the increase in live hog prices gives him more motivation to maintain the herd to supply the market at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.

According to the authorities, the increase in the price of live pigs is only a short-term improvement, and there is unlikely to be a sudden price change due to large-scale farms. In addition, Vietnam's leading livestock enterprises have not suffered major losses due to the epidemic and always have a ready supply. Therefore, people should not re-herd massively, which can easily cause a situation of "supply exceeding demand" and reduce the selling price.

Pig farmers, especially small-scale farms and households, need to strictly comply with the biosafety farming procedures issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, especially strictly implementing all stages in the farming process including: Standard barns, breeds of clear origin, food, drinking water, care and rearing processes, veterinary hygiene, and management of livestock import and export. Lam Dong continues to encourage the development of pig farming in the form of large-scale farms, ensuring disease safety, environmental protection associated with linkages and consumption of safe, hygienic, high-quality products.
