"Giants" such as Google, Facebook, Netflix... paid taxes in Vietnam in the past 6 months, up 19% compared to the same period last year.

On July 13, the General Department of Taxation ( Ministry of Finance ) said that in the first 6 months of the year, it has strengthened tax management for foreign suppliers, including "big guys" such as Google, Meta (Facebook), Microsoft, Netflix, and Apple.

Google, Facebook, Netflix and many foreign giants paid more than 4,000 billion VND in taxes.

Tax management with cross-border platforms faces many difficulties and challenges, but recently with many effective management measures, foreign suppliers have declared and paid directly via the electronic portal in the first 6 months, reaching VND 4,039 billion, an increase of nearly 19% over the same period in 2023.

According to the General Department of Taxation, the largest proportion of tax payers are technology giants such as Google, Meta, Netflix, Apple, Microsoft...

Also after the first 6 months of 2024, the tax authority recorded 26 new foreign suppliers registering, declaring and paying taxes in Vietnam through this channel.

"Thus, a total of 102 foreign suppliers have participated in fulfilling tax obligations through the Electronic Information Portal for Foreign Suppliers. These are enterprises from many countries, such as the US, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Ireland, Switzerland, the UK, Australia..." , said a representative of the General Department of Taxation.

The General Department of Taxation also recorded 383 e-commerce trading floors providing information on the portal, an increase of 22 units compared to the cumulative number by the end of 2023. State budget revenue from e-commerce business activities has continuously increased over the years.

Accordingly, tax management data in the last 2 years recorded tax collection results from organizations and individuals with e-commerce business activities in 2022 at 83 trillion VND. In 2023, the amount of tax paid was 97 trillion VND.

By 2024, the tax sector will manage 123,759 taxpayers with business activities in the field of e-commerce. Of these, 88,147 are individuals, 35,131 are businesses selling goods through e-commerce platforms, and 361 are businesses that own e-commerce trading platforms.

Regarding some tax management solutions for e-commerce in the coming time, the Ministry of Finance believes that it is necessary to continue to strengthen data connection and synchronous communication between ministries and branches, especially population data, e-commerce data, bank payment data, etc.

Along with that, review and complete the laws related to the management of e-commerce activities; build a tax registration and declaration portal for domestic e-commerce platforms, urge declarations, select inspectors, and handle some cases of tax evasion. In addition, promote the application of non-cash payments to manage tax collection more effectively.
