Several posts on social media in recent days have spread images and information that Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his son to the front lines in the war in Ukraine.
Euronews on December 18 quoted a Chinese post on social network X saying that Mr. Putin sent his son to war as an act to show that the Russian president "truly protects the country." The post was accompanied by a video of Mr. Putin pinning a medal on him and then shaking hands with a young man in military uniform.
The author of the post said this was happening “while leaders of other countries hide their children.” A series of Chinese-language accounts on social media platforms also made similar claims.

However, the information was verified to be false and the caption for the video was misleading. When compared with the RIA Novosti photo database, the image appeared with the same young man with whom Mr. Putin shook hands, identified as Senior Lieutenant Stepan Belov. The video and images spread on social networks were actually the event of Mr. Putin awarding the title of Hero of the Russian Federation to Senior Lieutenant Belov, at a ceremony in December 2022 to present awards to outstanding Russians in various fields.
RIA Novosti's photo archive confirms that the person shaking hands with Mr. Putin is Senior Lieutenant Stepan Belov.
The Kremlin website also posted a video of the event and identified the person who many social media users rumored to be "Putin's son" as Mr. Belov. It is unclear whether this person has any connection to Mr. Putin or not, but there is no evidence that Mr. Stepan Belov is the son of the Russian president.
There are still many mysteries surrounding President Putin's family. He has previously confirmed that he has two daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova.
