According to the latest report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, Bruteforce has emerged as the most popular form of attack by hackers against businesses in Southeast Asia.
In 2024, Kaspersky detected and blocked more than 53 million Bruteforce attacks across the region. Indonesia and Malaysia were the top affected countries, with a spike in attacks.

Bruteforce.Generic.RDP is known as a password cracking method by trying all possible character combinations to find the correct password. By doing so, the attacker can gain login information and access the system via RDP protocol.
RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is a Microsoft protocol that allows users to control devices remotely, over a local network or the Internet. These features make RDP a target for hackers to attack important devices.
"Every day, Kaspersky records more than 145,000 Bruteforce attacks against Southeast Asian businesses. This is alarming given the region's shortage of cybersecurity talent," said Adrian Hia, Managing Director of Kaspersky Asia Pacific .
According to Mr. Hia, hackers used artificial intelligence tools to increase the speed of password cracking, speeding up the process of penetrating the victim's system.
"Businesses need to assess and strengthen their cybersecurity protection to deal with this risk," Mr. Adrian Hia emphasized.
Security expert recommendation:
-Use strong passwords for personal and business accounts.
- Only access RDP via the company's internal VPN network.
- Enable network level authentication (NLA) before initiating RDP connections.
- Use two-factor authentication (2FA) for better protection.
- Disable RDP and close port 3389 when not needed.
- Use reliable security software to detect and respond to threats.
