9-year friendship of 2 male students who both won gold medals at the International Math Olympiad

(Dan Tri) - At the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad, the Chinese team won the championship. Among them, Tu Ky Minh and Tan Hong Nghi studied at the same Wuhan Jingkai Foreign Language High School and have known each other for 9 years.

The fact that two students from Wuhan Jingkai Foreign Language High School won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad has attracted the attention of the Chinese public to the school. The school is located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

Tu Ky Minh and Tan Hong Nghi are both studying in grade 11 at Wuhan Jing Kai Foreign Language High School. Specifically, they are studying in the "Solid Talent Training and Development" class. Mr. Ly Dat - the school's principal - said that the school has designed a specialized curriculum according to each student's ability.

Thanks to their intensive training in an intensive educational environment and their personal efforts, Xu Qiming and Tan Hongyi contributed to helping the Chinese team win the championship at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad. All six members of the team won gold medals, achieving a total of 231 points.

In particular, Ky Minh and Hong Nghi have been friends for 9 years. They have studied together, taken exams together, and grown up together on their learning journey.

Talking about his friendship with Ky Minh, Hong Nghi said: “Ky Minh and I have been friends for 9 years. We often exchange and discuss lessons. Ky Minh is very careful, hard-working, and has never had his presentation points deducted. As for me, I think faster than my friends in some types of exercises, and sometimes I come up with new solutions.”

While Qi Ming has two years of experience participating in the International Math Olympiad and has won two gold medals, it was not until this year that Hong Yi was able to participate in the competition. Last year, despite being in the top 30 best math students in China and being selected to study on the team, Hong Yi was ultimately eliminated.

Hong Nghi's mother said: "Since he was little, I realized that he had a talent for mathematics. When he was sad because he couldn't solve a difficult problem, he often went for a walk or took the train to relieve his stress."

After failing to win a place in the 2024 International Math Olympiad, Hong Nghi's mother advised her son to take a break and listen to his own wishes, whether he wanted to continue pursuing this competition or not.

The two teachers in charge of the mathematics team of Wuhan Jingkai Foreign Language High School - Mr. Li Yi and Mr. He Qi - said: "Xu Qiming and Tan Hongyi both have a passion and special ability in mathematics. We see great potential in them and always try our best to support them to achieve their dreams."

Currently, Wuhan Jingkai Foreign Language High School implements many specialized training programs in 5 basic science fields for students from elementary to high school, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics.

Following the personalized training orientation, the school has opened many classroom models suitable for the level and potential of each student.
