How long does postpartum hair loss last?

VnExpressVnExpress21/06/2023

I am 26 years old and gave birth 4 months ago. Recently, I've noticed a lot of hair loss. I heard this is normal and that all women experience it after giving birth.

So, how long does postpartum hair loss last? Will the hair grow back afterward? ( Thu Ha, Binh Thuan )

Reply:

Postpartum women face numerous health problems, including hair loss. The daily shedding of hair causes many women to lose confidence due to its impact on their appearance. Typically, postpartum hair loss can be bothersome but is usually temporary, starting 2-4 months after childbirth and lasting for several months afterward. Hair will usually regrow normally after 6 months.

Possible causes of postpartum hair loss in women include:

Hormonal changes : After childbirth, estrogen levels return to pre-pregnancy levels, prompting hair follicles to enter a resting phase. During this phase, hair stops growing, and after about 100 days, hair begins to fall out.

Nutritional deficiencies : After childbirth, nutrition is focused on breast milk to nourish the baby; therefore, the mother's body often lacks essential nutrients during this period. A diet lacking in iron and protein will lead to weak and falling hair.

Psychological disorders : Postpartum psychological and physiological changes, coupled with pressure from caring for the child, family, work, etc., can cause prolonged stress in women, which can also lead to hair loss.

Scalp fungus : This condition manifests as dry, scaly red patches accompanied by itching and hair loss. With early and proper treatment, hair will regrow.

Chemical treatments : Hair care products can damage hair, causing breakage and frizz. Chemical treatments include perming and bleaching.

Vitamin B7 (or biotin, vitamin H) is a nutrient that significantly affects the health of hair, nails, and scalp. A deficiency in vitamin B7 can cause hair loss and other dermatological problems. However, this is rare, as biotin is found in most common foods such as egg yolks, cereals, and meat.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the following nutrients to improve postpartum hair loss: biotin (vitamin B7); B vitamin complex; vitamin C; vitamin E; iron; and zinc. However, before supplementing with these nutrients, women should consult a doctor for examination and advice on appropriate dosage.

If hair loss is significant and persists for a year, patients should consult a dermatologist or cosmetic skin specialist for examination, diagnosis of the cause, and early treatment.
