For Vietnamese women, the ao dai is a traditional garment that accentuates femininity and gentleness. Therefore, the ao dai is often worn on special days and important occasions. Since 2019 – the first year the Vietnam Women's Union launched "Ao Dai Week" – this activity has become an annual event attracting a large number of women participants.
Building on the success and widespread impact of the Ao Dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) activities in recent years, and in anticipation of the 60th anniversary of the "Three Responsibilities" Movement (March 1965 - March 2025), the 115th anniversary of International Women's Day (March 8, 1910 - March 8, 2025), and the 1,985th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung Uprising, the "Ao Dai Week" and folk dance performance in 2025 will continue to be launched nationwide. The activities will take place from March 1st to 8th, aiming to spread and honor the beauty of the Ao Dai, and to inspire love and responsibility in preserving and promoting the national cultural identity.
In Binh Thuan province , the Standing Committee of the Provincial Women's Union has issued a document requesting the Women's Unions of districts, towns, and cities; the Women's Unions of the Police, Military, and Border Guard; the Propaganda and Women's Affairs Department of the Provincial Labor Union; the Binh Thuan Provincial Vietnamese Ao Dai Heritage Club; and the New Generation Women's Club to mobilize members, women, and female civil servants and employees in their localities, agencies, and units to respond to the event with creative, practical, and specific activities suitable to the characteristics of the locality and unit. This includes launching a campaign to wear the Ao Dai on working days, appropriate to the conditions and specifics of their profession, from March 1st to 8th.
Ms. Phan Thi Vi Van – Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union – said: This year, in addition to the ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) fashion show, the Union also requested local branches to practice and perform sample folk dances to the music of the following songs: the medley "The Country in Spring" (including "The Country Full of Joy" and "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City"); "Saigon Girl Carrying Ammunition"; and "Hello Ho Chi Minh City" using sample music and songs. Based on that, outstanding images or performance videos will be selected and sent to the Provincial Women's Union for compilation and voting…
The ao dai is the embodiment of the Vietnamese nation, a symbol of a country where women are resilient, hardworking, and always self-sacrificing. Through various periods of development, the ao dai has continuously evolved while maintaining its traditional character, contributing to an elegant, gentle, and subtly alluring beauty unmatched by any other garment. To this day, the exact origin of the Vietnamese ao dai remains unclear, but based on the nation's glorious historical context, researchers have reached a consensus that this national costume has existed for thousands of years. The ao dai not only lives in the hearts of the Vietnamese people but has also been incorporated into art, becoming an integral part of the Vietnamese soul both in their homeland and around the world .
