According to a statement from the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the invitation of General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam will pay a state visit to North Korea and attend the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea from October 9 to 11.

This is General Secretary To Lam's first visit to North Korea, taking place not long after his state visit to South Korea last August.

The trip to Pyongyang coincides with the two countries celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations. In January this year, senior leaders of Vietnam and North Korea exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 75th anniversary.

The congratulatory messages from Vietnamese leaders to North Korean leaders affirmed that in the 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and North Korea, personally built by President Ho Chi Minh and President Kim Il Sung and nurtured by generations of leaders and people of the two countries, has continuously developed.

The Party, State and people of Vietnam always attach importance to and wish to promote the cooperative relationship with the DPRK to develop more strongly and substantially in many fields, in accordance with the aspirations of the people of the two countries and the international commitments of each country, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

At the same time, he expressed his belief that the two sides will coordinate well in implementing activities to celebrate the "Vietnam - North Korea Friendship Year 2025" with meaningful exchange and cooperation activities.

At the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea held in Hanoi on October 2, North Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Ri Sung Guk introduced the achievements that the country and people of North Korea have achieved over the past 80 years under the leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea, headed by generations of leaders including President Kim Il Sung, General Secretary Kim Jong Il and now General Secretary and State President Kim Jong Un.

The Ambassador affirmed that the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two Parties and States, personally built by President Kim Il Sung and President Ho Chi Minh and nurtured by generations of senior leaders of the two countries, has been continuously consolidated and developed, in accordance with the aspirations and wishes of the people of each country.

He congratulated the achievements that the Party, State and people of Vietnam have attained in recent times; and firmly believed that the Communist Party of Vietnam, headed by General Secretary To Lam, will successfully implement the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and successfully achieve the two goals of becoming a developing country with modern industry and high middle income by 2030 and becoming a developed country with high income by 2045.

In 2007, the then General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Mr. Nong Duc Manh, paid an official friendship visit to North Korea from October 16 to 18 of the same year.

In the opposite direction, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un came to Hanoi to attend the US-North Korea summit and pay an official friendship visit to Vietnam from February 26 to March 2, 2019.
