The presence of Vietnam National Shipping Lines ( VIMC ) in India not only affirms the pioneering role of the Corporation, but also contributes to promoting trade relations, including maritime cooperation between the two countries.

Mr. Le Quang Trung, Deputy General Director of VIMC presented on maritime transport and port exploitation capacity at the Workshop.

VIMC and the Embassy of Vietnam in India recently jointly organized the Workshop “Vision and Investment Potential in Port, Maritime Transport and Logistics Systems in India” . The workshop was held on November 27, in New Delhi (India).

The workshop is an opportunity for VIMC to seek strategic directions in expanding market share in the country with the fifth largest economy in the world, while promoting Vietnam - India trade cooperation.

A report from Invest India shows that the Indian economy will grow at an impressive rate of 8.3% in the financial year 2023-24, leading the world's major economies. With a target of becoming the third largest economy in the world by 2027, the country is creating an attractive investment environment, especially in the fields of port infrastructure, shipping and logistics.

India’s foreign trade is expected to surpass $2 trillion by 2030, showing that there is plenty of room for growth in the logistics sector. These figures are an opportunity for maritime businesses like VIMC to capitalize on their advantages and build efficient supply chains, directly connecting Vietnam to a market of more than 1.4 billion people.

According to Vietnamese Ambassador to India, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Vietnam and India are connected by cultural and civilizational ties. The two countries have always supported each other in the struggle for independence in the last century and in the cause of national development today. Vietnam-India bilateral relations are increasingly developing strongly in many fields under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.

In particular, the recent State visit to India by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has created a great impetus to further promote bilateral relations. One of the Prime Minister’s directives is to double the trade and investment turnover between the two countries.

Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai highly appreciated the essential role of the seaport system, maritime transport and logistics in maritime connectivity as well as in trade and investment.

“Despite the remarkable development of air connectivity between Vietnam and India, bilateral maritime connectivity remains modest, not commensurate with the needs and potential of the two countries. Investment in the port system, maritime transport and logistics in India will directly facilitate economic interaction, diversify maritime transport services and bring benefits to the two countries,” said Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai.

According to Mr. Le Quang Trung, Deputy General Director of VIMC, VIMC's goal when seeking investment opportunities in India is to develop a complete service chain and effective connections to promote import and export between the two countries.

VIMC leaders also said they wish to not only maintain existing shipping routes but also expand maritime routes, cooperate with Indian partners to invest in appropriate seaport and logistics infrastructure systems, thereby creating a complete logistics ecosystem and promoting two-way goods between the two countries.

It is known that VIMC Lines, a member company of VIMC, is implementing direct container routes between Hai Phong - India and Cua Lo - Kolkata from 2021 and 2022. These routes not only shorten the transportation time but also create stability for the supply chain, strongly supporting import-export businesses of both countries. VIMC Lines plans to open more shipping routes to the ports of Chennai and Kattupalli in India.

In the future, VIMC aims to build logistics centers called “Vietnam House” in India. This will be a platform to provide integrated services, from storage, delivery to freight transport, with optimal efficiency and competitive costs, serving the growing needs of businesses in the two markets.

With a favorable geographical position and growing trade relations, the prospects for cooperation between Vietnam and India in the maritime sector are bright, especially as both countries are aiming for a bilateral trade turnover of 20 billion USD.

Also on November 27, the VIMC delegation held a Customer Conference with the participation of representatives of the Ship Owners Association, Invest India, shipyards/ship repair shops, port corporations, shipping companies, logistics companies, import-export companies, etc.

The purpose of these activities is to explore opportunities to expand maritime and logistics activities between the two countries.
