Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 25 that allies need to determine the format for upcoming peace talks with Russia and that Ukraine's participation is needed for the talks to be successful.
Specifically, at a press conference in Kiev, Mr. Zelensky said: "I understand that contacts can take place in many different forms... I think we should focus on this."
Mr Zelensky's statement alluded to the possibility of negotiations aimed at achieving a "just peace".
He also stressed that talks without Ukraine's participation would not bring "real results".
In a related development, according to Xinhua , in his latest interview, Russian President Putin stated that Russia is ready to negotiate on the Ukraine issue. "We have always talked about this and I want to emphasize once again that we are ready to negotiate on the Ukraine issue," President Putin emphasized.
However, President Putin noted that President Zelensky had previously signed a decree banning negotiations with the current Russian leader and that the decree is still in effect.
According to the Russian leader, as long as the decree remains in effect, it will be difficult to talk about resuming or "properly completing" the negotiations.
President Putin affirmed that Russia "has a lot in common" with the current US administration. Assessing President Donald Trump as "a smart and practical person", the Kremlin leader said that the US leader is unlikely to impose sanctions on Russia like his predecessor Joe Biden, because doing so would be "shooting himself in the foot", causing damage to the US economy .
