The Independent Singapore News quoted the survey report "City Pulse 2025 - The Magnetic City" published by the Gensler Research Institute, saying that Ho Chi Minh City ranked 2nd out of 65 cities worldwide in terms of the best ability to "retain" residents.
Topping the list of the world's best cities for retaining residents in 2025 is Taipei (Taiwan - China), with 64% of residents surveyed saying they "don't think" or "very much don't think" about moving elsewhere.
After Taipei, 61% of residents said they wanted to settle down and stay in Ho Chi Minh City for a long time. Not only is it a vibrant economic center, Ho Chi Minh City also scores points with people thanks to its wide-open job opportunities, youthful and dynamic lifestyle; unique culture and its own identity. In particular, the important factor that people are attached to Ho Chi Minh City is the close-knit and united community.
Also in the Top 5, Singapore with 59% of residents choosing to stay, Sydney (Australia) ranked 4th with 58% and Berlin (Germany) had 51% of residents participating in the survey affirming their desire to live stably and long-term.
The survey, conducted with 33,000 people in 29 countries, was conducted by the world's largest architecture and design firm, with the main content revolving around the motivations that make them stay or leave the city where they live.
According to the survey, people tend to stay in a city because they want to maintain emotional connections and enjoy meaningful life experiences. Conversely, they often choose to leave in search of financial or physical security, and tend to move to cities that meet their basic needs well.
In the question set, when respondents were asked to identify the most important criteria for deciding where to live, 83% said the cost of living ranked highest, followed by 81% who said crime level; high-quality health care ranked third with 80% choosing it, and 74% said job opportunities; and tax rates came in at 70%.
However, the report also points out: while the criteria attract residents to move to a city, what makes them choose to "stay" is enjoyment and a sense of belonging.
